We've had some discussion lately as to temp/sun conditions on the development of color. Cooler morning temps and sun vs cool temp and shade, vs hot and shade, vs hot and sun and whatever combos we can come up with : )
And there has been mention of a cultivar's first flower to be rather different from the expectation.

Well, I have a first flower ever on Paul Aucoin. To say that it does not resemble the cultivar would be an understatement. I took three photos, early this morning, right after I came home, and after cutting the scape and putting it in lukewarm sugar water. It sat for about an hour before I photographed it. The flower is about 4 inches across...

I give to you.... Um... Well, I'm not really sure... I guess that depends upon what you think : )

I would certainly keep these photos to document it but would not toss this out until you have had a chance to see it rebloom next spring. Blooms at this time of year often do not resemble the plant at all. You didn't say, but I am guessing this is fairly new? Be sure to keep the name of your seller listed in your records so that you can contact the person should it turn out to be incorrect next season. You are right, this looks nothing like the cultivar but I would certainly wait and evaluate what you see on next year's bloom.

I planted it in mid-October and didn't expect to see it bloom. It sent up a scape and I pinched all but the first bud off- I figured it could afford to waste energy on one bloom, but I wasn't risking more... And since it's brand-new... I just kinda had to seeeee.... Whistling
It's from a reputable seller and I plan on leaving it alone til next summer. I am certain that this dl doesn't look like anything I ordered. I got it as a BOGO, so I have a second set of fans that could turn out to be Paul Aucoin. Even if it's not PA, it does have a really nice green throat- which I'm discovering a liking for, so not all is lost- and next summer might bring some pleasant surprises. If it ends up being a NOID, well I'm sure someone will have an idea once I have some decent statistics.

Your plant has an eye (the colour in the eyezone is darker than the colour in the rest of the petal). 'Paul Aucoin' is described as having a powder bluish eye but has what I would describe as a watermark (the colour in the eyezone is lighter than the colour in the rest of the petal). Although the environment has strong effects on the pigments in both these flowers I do not think that it can change an eye into a watermark or vice versa.

Might I suggest that you give the seller a copy of the photos and a heads-up that it does not seem to be the purchased cultivar. This may be desirable as, if the seller was Marriott, they have sold their retail daylily business to Schreiner's Iris.

Maurice, I was very skeptical about the weather making such dramatic changes to the bloom. I figured it ought to at least resemble PA in some form, but I cannot find any feature that reminds me of PA.

I will email the seller today *sigh*
Thanks for your input!

Hi Diana. I got the same deal. I didn't take a pic of it, but my first bloom looked exactly like yours. I'm hoping the situation will improve once the plants settle in and bloom in their proper season!

I spent time scrolling through Maryott's catalog to see if I could match it to another cv. I am convinced that it's not PA. I have a second set of fans that might be, but I'm thinking this fall blooming set is Mauve Mystique. The foliage on the two sets of fans is different in color and texture- the false PA being lighter in color and texture. The darker set feels more sturdy- more heft to them.
