My plant has dried out (2 out of 5 leaves) my tester says it's dry but when I water even just a small cup it sinks right to the bottom of the dish - I don't water often - I have had for a year now - dry leaves can mean over or under water I don't know which one it is - I want to save this plant - thanks in advance

Repot repot ! Probably rootbound.
Needs a bigger pot. In mean time i would put em in a bowl of water for 20 minutes to let him soak.

Hi Stephanieserie, Welcome!

The problem with your Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae) could be due to the plant needing a bit larger container and fresh soil. Bird of Paradise are fairly drought tolerant once established so your plants roots may not be taking up water as needed. You might try sitting it in a tub of water to see if it soaks up any water from the bottom. If there isn't much soil left in the container, or if what soil is left is highly compacted, the water might be draining so quickly that the roots can't take up the moisture.

Oh ! And Stephen be sure to scuff up the root ball when you up pot it !
So roots can grow out of rootball.
