do you think this could be carpenteria californica? the flower and branch does not look like a phlox.

I don't know what your palnt is and cannot see the leaf detail in the photos. If you think it may be Carpenteria californica you can compare the leaves of your plant to ones in images online. Here are two links so you can compare.

I'm thinking Carpenteria too.. The lower leaves often brown out and look unattractive..
