![]() By Bubbles | Gordon Hawkins' Brooklyn roof garden is well known in gardening website circles. He frequently posts photos of his exotic and eclectic collection of brugmansias, passifloras, clerodendrons, and more. The source of many brugmansia collections has been his generous free cuttings in late fall each year. Gordon also freely shares his clever directions for building planters and patio furniture from foam insulation boards. [View the item] |

Wow, Sandi and Gordon, all I can say is thank you so much for putting this together. What an amazing trip that had to be for you Sandi. And what an amazing garden you have Gordon. I can't begin to think about how a person would even get started on such an magical garden. Thank you to both of you for sharing the trip and the garden. |

Thanks Vic and Lynn. My photos don't do the garden justice. My only disappointment was Gordon's garden blossomed a couple of weeks after we left! |

Delightful tour of this rooftop garden. What a wonderful getaway. My favorite photo is the display of succulents with the neutral background and mulch. What a calming effect in that riot of color. I love it! Where on earth do you move all the tender plants in winter and what an incredible labor of love that must be. Thanks to you both for sharing the tour. Be content moving inch by inch because, by days end, the inches, will add up to feet and yards. Fulfilling ambitious objectives is usually done one step at a time. |

Pod, I'm so glad to see you posting here! The succulents were at the top stairwell going out to the roof. Kind of a little alcove of their own. I had a better photo, but it had my DGS in it. I hope Gordon will drop in and explain how he made it out of foam core, I believe. The hearts above the planter are part of his collection. He had heart displays all over! |

What a treat this was, Sandi! Thanks so much for taking us along with you on your visit. I think I first "met" you, Gordon, over foam plaques and containers, but have seen more of his amazing work on Garden Art. I am amazed that you were able to get all of the plants, furniture and accessories up the winding staircase! And Gordon, what a view you have! It is a beautiful place to enjoy as you care so lovingly for your garden. I hope the snow didn't hurt things too much. Sandi, thanks for the wonderful article. Gordon, it simply amazes me that you've accomplished so much on a roof! Everything is so well thought out. And I love all your foam creations. Truly an oasis in the city, Gordon. Delightful! Thanks, Sandi. I garden for the pollinators. |

Becky, the view was breathtaking. If I lived there, I'd only go downstairs for the essentials, then back up to "live" in the garden. Maybe Gordon can give us a tutorial on creating outdoor furniture from the insulation foam board. And about the ice cream, I have very little will power, so I could be tempted too often. Chris and Tee, I'm so glad you enjoyed the "tour." |

Awww...you're too sweet Carey. Thank you. |

I'm serious! I made DH sit down and read too...and he commented how good it was and loved the gardens too, which is a HUGE compliment coming from him! |
Bubbles Oct 31, 2011 3:44 PM CST |
Well, the garden speaks for itself. It was my kind of garden with one of everything and two of most! And thank your DH for the compliment too. |

What costume? I'm a little sensitive about my excessive hair, Becky. I appreciate you agreeing with Carey, tho! |
Sharon Oct 31, 2011 7:43 PM CST |
Bubbles. It isn't your excessive hair I'm concerned about. It's the yellow feathers. Did Gordon notice when you were there? |

You know, I was just thinking...tonight when I take down this avatar, whatever I write here is going to be sooo confusing, but here goes. I usually molt when it gets warm, so I'm okay. I don't think Gordon noticed, he was probably fixated on my large nose. |
