I acquired a Crinum yesterday with a label: Crinum asiaticum var. procerum 'Kaawanum'. The nursery man is very well informed and reliable. I cannot find any reference to this Crinum in any site on line. Any help or comment appreciated.

Welcome! It is mentioned in the comments on this link to the Crinum page on this NGA site.

ThePlantList.org does not recognize it as a variety. They state it is a synonym for Crinum asiaticum L. and that it had been included in an earlier rendition of ThePlantList but had been removed (for who knows what reasons).

I wouldn't consider your name wrong, but maybe outdated. It was delisted at about the same time as Sooby's article was published. What I gather from that discussion is that there were a lot of opinions about whether these were different from Crinum asiaticum var. asiaticum.

Once a plant is labeled, it is hard to convince the world there is no such plant.

The NGA page I indicated above has var. procerum as a synonym of Crinum asiaticum var. asiaticum. NGA uses the Catalogue of Life for the validity of species names in the database, and it indicates therein that C. asiaticum var. procerum is a synonym of the acdepted name, C. asiaticum var. asiaticum (so an infraspecific variety of C. asiaticum, not a synonym of it). Here's the page:

http://www.catalogueoflife.org...

The 'Kaawanum' part of the name is written as a cultivar of that variety. It's hard to check the validity of a cultivar name unless it is registered with an ICRA (International Cutlivar Registration Authority). Looking at the list of ICRAs there is no individual registry for Crinum.

http://www.ishs.org/sci/taxlis...

Assuming 'Kaawanum' is a valid cultivar name, then the correct name is Crinum asiaticum var. asiaticum 'Kaawanum', but the NGA database doesn't have a separate page for the cultivar. If not considering it a valid cultivar epithet then just call it Crinum asiaticum var. asiaticum.

Thumbs up I wasn't sure because you said it was a synonym of Crinum asiaticum L and is not a variety, whereas according to the CoL that is used for NGA it is not a synonym of Crinum asiaticum but is a synonym of Crinum asiaticum var. asiaticum so is a variety. That's disregarding the cultivar epithet of course.

I've added an entry for Crinum (Crinum asiaticum var. asiaticum 'Kaaawanum') @DonHendrickson, please note the spelling with an extra a.
