Here is a link to his website. It takes a minute to load but is fun to look at the photos of peonies we probably won't see here in the US.
'Quitzin' is available here, but is very pricey. http://www.speedcloud.com/home...

Thanks for the link, LG! He grows stunning peonies! Wonder why they don't export to the US? WOuld love to grow Maly Semyachik and Charlotte Rattenbury.

They send all over the world, it sounds like. They aren't a commercial grower whereas a specialized small select hybridizer/ serious collector. Interesting philosophy in sales. One more to further peony hybridizing it sounds like. Thanks for the link.

Karen, I think probably some folks do have them here in the US, but not in quantities to resell. They are probably using them in their breeding programs.

We will have to check that website out Sept. 14 and see how pricey they are.
Sighing!

He is very direct in his language, that these are not at all cheap and very limited. Based on the price Quitzin is sold for after propagation in the US, it would be interesting to see what a serious hybridizer would spend to bring it into the US.

Since Hollingsworth's offered Quitzen I'm hoping they will offer more in the future, also the Peony Shop could be a source. He does some amazing work! Looks like most were introduced in the last 6 years with just Quitzen and Sumvitg a decade older. That's a lot of new introductions in a short time.
I did get Quitzen this fall and I have Lemon Chiffon, both are parents of some of those seedlings. Looks like I need to attempt a cross-pollination!

I looked at the peony database and he has another 21 APS registered peonies in addition to the 40 shown on Speedcloud. The only one with photos was Quitzen, though.

Yes, I think they will be out of my reach. Guess I will have to settle for looking at their pics right now. In the meantime, we can certainly try to breed some of these special stars on our own, right Liz?? Smiling Smiling

Yep! I just need to read up on collecting and keeping pollen. I know it can be frozen, Nate B. talked about some of his process during our tour of Solaris. Just imagine the seedlings we could produce!

I spoke with Harald almost three years ago and he explained that he would need to ship at least ten roots to the US in order for it to make economic sense. Phyto inspections and shipping costs a fortune. Warmerdam Peonies was offering Quitzin and Triphena Parkin but were pricey and there again overseas shipping costs. A&D peonies also carried Quitzin. As Harald & Ruud explained it to me, we have to be patient and they will arrive here gradually. Whistling Crossing Fingers!

Worthy specimens do end up here. I'm sure a lot of them feel similar toward the work of our world renowned hybridizers here that we are so fortunate to have available to us. Perhaps it is always human nature to want the difficult, the nearly impossible, the rare... when there is so much beauty in our own backyard. Take time to be grateful for what you have and still dream...

I like the Electriss Seafoam one, but can probably find similar near here.

Several of them sound really distinctive with green accents. Green accents seem to be a very popular thing in peonies lately! I'd love to see them in real life. It's so hard to tell what's too similar to spend the energy/time/money to track down from just a few photos. There are field pics of Triphena Parkin on Facebook, looks really pretty.

You're right, Tracey. I'm perfectly content with my peonies when they're growing and in bloom, it's just harder when it's cold out and everything's brown and dead...

Can I ask what you mean by green accents, Liz? Is it something similar to this?

With regards to home breeding, I can't wait to cross Salmon Dream with Lemon Chiffon and Athena and Anne Oveson to Lemon Chiffon and vice versa. So exciting!

Yes, Karen! Those that have touches of green in the bloom...

I've done some searches today, will probably start collecting pollen this spring for deliberate crosses. And found out that it can be frozen for future use as well.

Karen, that is a beauty! Do you know the name?

Liz do you follow Rich Grenier's hybridizing page on FB? He is so nice, I'm sure he would answer any questions you might have.

Yes, I am longing for Spring already. I am not much of a holiday person.... the day is most look forward to is Dec 22- the Winter Solstice. When the days start getting longer I get hopeful.

LG, that is a mislabel Mother's Choice from Gilbert Wild. It started growing green petals in some of the blooms this past spring. If this peony continues to produce blooms with green petals next year, I will dig it up and send you and anybody else interested in it a division for postage. By next fall, i think I maybe able to get 4 divisions out of it. If it does not produce blooms with green petals, then it maybe just a freakish occurence.

Well Karen that is interesting. I would sure like to have a piece of it if continues to bloom with the green accents.
I have dug up two mislabeled Gilbert Wild peonies this Fall and I have two more to go. I won't buy from them any more.

OK, I will post pics if it blooms any green next spring. I am not into green petals mixed in with the flower at this time. Maybe it will grow on me but for now I don't value it as much as you and others would. So I will be glad to share it with you.
