RJ - I was just reading about walipini this morning on permies.com. You might want to check out the forums over there. Lots of feedback on them.

I've never seen them called "walipini" before, but I think pit greenhouses are a fantastic idea; I'd build one but our water table is too high Sad . I don't see any reason why they would be an eyesore, any more than any other greenhouse.

Don't they build homes inside of a mountain like that? I supposed the city wants to get their grubby hands on a say-so about everything we do.

Well, it did say that it was a "makeshift greenhouse," built using salvaged materials, and had "slumped a bit" due to heavy rains. Being in a city, I can see where this might have been deemed an "eyesore."

Interesting article. Not enough land to do one here, but for the land it would be a tempting experiment for me. Most cities have regulations about greenhouses. I do see some rather unsightly ones at times. Noone wants something that looks like a "shack" in their neighborhood.

I hate when the city says gardening projects are eyesores. I don't have a backyard so I have to be very careful because GOD FORBID that there would be vegetables growing in my front yard.

And I haven't even dug one of these!
Keep going!
