Today when I was watering my plants, I noticed my dracaena fragrans 'Massangeana' has a flower stalk. I've had the plant for a few years and it's been neglected for the most part. I would put it in a dark corner and it would barely hang on to life, and once I put it outside, it would start growing again. I've killed lots of dracaenas but surprisingly this one has survived. It's currently in a dark corner right now and now that it has a flower stalk, I may just move it to a sunnier location?

OK I won't move it. I'm surprised it's blooming in a dark corner. The plant is probably 4 ft tall now. Thumbs up

Maybe you have enough light it needs and the temperature in sustained, so it is happy as it is. I am careful with any of my indoor blooming plants when they are in blooming stage, so easy for them to go temperamental and blast.

I definitely don't want the buds to blast. I guess it gets enough light from the light in the dining room? I'm surprised it's still alive. Hilarious!

I was sitting in the living room, watching t.v. and I kept smelling a floral fragrance. I walked to the dining room because I figured it was the dracaena blooms. The living room, kitchen, and dining room are filled with its fragrance. It reminds me of gardenias or honeysuckle. Hurray!

Thanks Tiffany! The scent only got stronger throughout the night. I could smell it from my bedroom. I read the growing tip dies after flowering. I hope new tips form since it's only one stem.

Fabulous! I've not had the pleasure of being able to observe one over time, only seen blooms on one once at a hotel, but it probably does like its' close relative, Cordyline fruticosa. The inflorescence falls off, then the tip keeps growing. Does that sound like what you read? Your plant & others who have observed can school us. :+)

I think that's what I had read? I misunderstood what other people were saying. Thumbs up Now I can breathe a sigh of relief because I was worried the rest of the plant would die without growing tips. This is the first time I've experienced the blooms so it's exciting. Hurray!

I care for hundreds of Dracaena species in a variety of allocations and many of them have flowered over the years. Usually, it is with older plants that have been in the same pot for a long time and have been relatively undisturbed. Light does not seem to be a factor in their flowering.

The floral aroma elicits different reactions from people - some love it and others find it cloyingly sweet. I had one lawyer insist that the plant be removed from his office because of the aroma! After a week or so, the small flowers along the flower stem start to turn brown and dry. Because they are also very sticky, they can make a mess when they fall. I usually cut off the entire flower stem at the first sign of the flowers starting to die back.

I think I've only had mine for about 4 years now but it's been in the same pot its whole life. The plant is about 4 ft. tall now. I really like the smell of the blooms and my family likes the fragrance too. Thanks for telling me about the sticky flowers. I'll remove the flower stalk once the flowers start fading. Thumbs up

Hi Tiffany, the blooms finally faded about 2 weeks ago, but surprisingly when one or two blooms were left, their fragrance was still pretty strong. I hope it blooms again because it was a neat experience.

I wish I could have bottled the fragrance. Hilarious! I hope yours blooms soon? How many dracaenas do you have?
