Me and my relatives have been growing these in California for several years but we have no idea what they are?

They grow on a single stalk sprouting geometric leaf patterns first one line and then perpendicular to that line, so viewed from above they make a a cross. They are bright green with purple coloration along the stems and around the serrated edges of the leaves. After a year or two they send up a seed stalk with clusters of seed pouches. Sometimes these seed pouches start putting out roots before they have even detached from the plant. They have a succulent quality but I've never seen anything quite like them.

The images I have attached are of several of them planted in a pot - they are probably overcrowded. With the seed stalk they can grow to around 6 feet tall. They thrive in the southern California climate.

Any ideas??

I think they are Kalanchoe prolifera, although leaves seems less succulent. Perhaps there are some variation on leaves form and succulent quality on this species.

Hello,

I am a beginner in the gardening, but I work at a Kroger Grocery store in the floral department, and we just sold our last kalancho and your pictures do not look anything like it. The leaves on the one we sold were scalloped and leathery feeling, with dark green rounded leaves and tiny flowers that were white, pink, lavender, orange, or yellow.

I will see if I can find a picture and upload it tomorrow.

This is the type of Kalancho that we sold. I did not know that there were so many varieties of Kalancho.
