Do any of you guys (or gals) grow freesias as houseplants?

I have some which I planted in August, and which began sprouting in November. Currently they're about 10-11" high but there are no blooms yet.

I'm just looking for feedback/experience.

That website is blocked on my network. I will try it later from another location.

Just curious, since I asked for feedback and experience, if you wrote it?

Feedback and experience. Do you understand what those words mean and how they might be contraindicated by a search engine? They're the whole point of having a forum. Sticking tongue out

That's one I got with google for freesia houseplants. Adding the word forum got this thread as the first result for me (Is that because I use this site and have read this thread?) I often get some discussion result from gardenweb when looking for plant info.

Thank you. That is a good idea. I will ask around. My plants are growing fine, but there are no blooms.

Jack, please adjust your attitude. We are trying to help you. Many Google searches can turn up people sharing their experiences. On any one given forum there might not be an answer to all questions. Gene

Hello Jai,

I grow freesias but outdoors in a container. From what I have seen with mine, they go dormant during our warm and hot months and resumes growth in late Fall to Spring. Right now they are in leaf, no bloom stalks yet. I get the blooms stalks in Spring. I got mine first from our local Home Depot, loved the scent. Got them to rebloom the following year, but not as pretty like when I first got them. This is its third year. To be honest I am just waiting to see if it will grow better or not. But I do like it tolerates very well our mild winter here, since we also get intermittent rain here as well.

Understanding that they like to grow in cool temperature, if grown indoors, maybe try to position in the part of your house that is not too warm, like temps not going above 50F. Some grow them in cold frames.

Thank you. This is helpful. I know they like colder weather but I had not seen anything that talked about exact temperatures until now. For some reason, I would've thought that "cold" meant something warmer than 50F since they are from South Africa.

Mine are in my basement under grow lights and I guess part of my confusion is that compared to my paper whites they are taking their good old time. Three generations of paper whites have grown, bloomed, and become compost while the freesias are still growing. lol

When and if I finally get blooms I will post pictures!

Yes they do get a warm treatment but that is before the onset of the cold season. But once those leaves show up, they like to be kept on the cool side and kept cool till the flowers emerge. I always think they like that cool sun feel.

Do read this thread I started before in the Bulbs forum: The thread "freesias" in Bulbs forum

It helped me understand how others experienced growing theirs.
