I would like to try to grow a cactus/succulent or two from seed. But it's just an experiment to see whether I can do it (I have heating pads, cactus mix, and grow lights) so I don't need a whole packet of seeds. Is there a place where you can get just a few seeds (5 or 6)?

I feel dumb for even asking, but I'd literally be wasting 95% of the packet if I buy one. I still might, if that's the lowest quantity available.

You could try the fruit from your local grocery store, if they have prickly pear fruit (sometimes called tunas) or dragon fruit. The two plants make very different sized seeds (first much bigger). You will find that bigger seeds are usually easier to take care of as very young plants because they become bigger and more independent much quicker. If you do use seeds from fruit, try to clean them well so the fruity bits don't contaminate your germination. You can shake them in a glass of water and the seeds usually fall to the bottom, away from the rest.

You can buy small packages on evilbay, there are a few USA sellers that specialize in succulent seeds.

Ferry-Morse sells a mixed packet for $1.58. You can buy them at the local Big Box store.

Do you have any idea what is actually included in that packet? I am just curious, as I have never seen them. It may be that they sell them in Nevada but not Pennsylvania?

I put my location as Lancaster Pennsylvania, virtually visited the Home Depot there and came up with Ferry-Morse Cactus Seed Mix for $1.58. The label says it includes saguaro, hedgehog, fishhook barrel, organ pipe, dollar prickly pear, desert prickly pear, Christmas cholla, cane cholla, Santa Rita prickly pear and cardon.

Some of those will eventually be bigger than your house but it's a cheap why to start. I grew this mix many years ago and was pleasantly surprised by the number of seeds that germinated.

If you purchased a packet and sorted by seed size, the smallest seeds would be the barrels and the larger the cholla and prickly pears.

Now I have to convince my computer I didn't really move to Pennsylvania. Smiling

Ha ha. For some reason when I go to the Home Depot's website it assumes I am in Minnesota and I have never even been there.
