Hello,

I have had this plant for nearly a year. I have watched it grow wildly, sulk, become stagnant, be temporarily content, and drop leaves constantly. I would like to know how to best care for this plant for a consistent thrive, but cannot even figure out what it is. Bought from a greenhouse, seems like a typical houseplant, though I have never seen one. I tend to think its a fern of sorts, because though I can keep all my orchids happy.. I can kill a fern in a week.. and this one is seemingly always unhappy. Any help identifying would be much appreciated. Thx!

Sorry the photos aren't amazing.. let me know if more are needed

Hard to tell from the photos, but it reminds me of Artillery Fern, Pilea microphylla (which is not actually a fern at all). It looks like it needs stronger, brighter light.

Hi & welcome!

If it makes you feel better, yours is one of the oldest potted ones I've seen or heard of. You might try propagating some cuttings of it to see if you can get a younger, more perky individual going.

For potted plants in general, most appreciate more sun during the short days and less intense rays of winter, when being kept at higher latitudes, than was needed to keep them looking perky and growing normally and vigorously during summer.
