I have for some time been looking for info about http://www.claragarden.it
So far I haven't found much, but http://www.irisfirenze.it/link... does link to them.

Site is almost 100% in Italian, but the registration page offers english translations and the page about delivery states (in English):
"EXTRA COSTS:
Claragarden will add any shipping costs to total order that are starting from € 10,00 in relation with wight of order and you will be notified by email."

What made me a bit suspicious is what appears to be the use of "borrowed" photographs, including from our own forum members... I don't know or claim to know if they have permission for all those pictures, but needless to say I'd preferred if they used their own. Doesn't mean there is anything wrong with their irises, though.

They do have a lot of very recent iris, as far as I know not otherwise available in Europe. For instance I did notice some 2016 Sutton introductions offered for next season.

I just had a look around their facebook page. They have photos of their fields, their market stall and several of their own seedlings under evaluation. They seem very well established.

Maybe using other people's photos is their only crime if that has occurred. It is possible people have posted photos on NGA as well as other websites and maybe a copyright wasn't applied everywhere.

Many thanks for your time and effort Rob and Robin Smiling Smiling Smiling I really appreciate it.

Rob, Google translate is a great tool. I have a plugin for my browser that uses it.

Robin, excellent point about their Facebook. I do have a hard time believing that someone would do such a comprehensive effort and not be genuine. I had a look at their catalogue as a PDF as well and they have a lot of comments about the irises and how they grow.

The website is an old one as well. I found a Swedish essay about daylilies that referenced it already in 2006.

I guess I should investigate their shipping a bit closer. Just because their registration page and some delivery info is in English, doesn't mean that they actually ship outside Italy. However I'm not sure I really want to know as I already gotten more irises than planned for next year...

I think you should try them out with a small order, just to see if they are legit. You would be doing such a nice favor for your European neighbors! That should justify buying more irises?? Whistling Hilarious!

Just walk along, Lilli, nothing to see here. They just grow 1120 iris cultivars - with such a small selection, you wouldn't find anything you like anyway Sticking tongue out Big Grin Sticking tongue out Drooling Hilarious!

I wonder if they have any connection with Bruce Filardi at International Iris. I know he has won awards in Italy for his iris, and he could be a supplier of newer US iris for them. He also carries Italian hybridizers on his site. It may be also that it is easier to ship rhizomes to Italy...?

Thank you, Leslie and that is an interesting theory. I believe you are right and that there are some differences in regulations between countries when plants enter the EU so it would be easier from some countries than other. However I don't know the specifics for Italy. I did look at the Bruce Filardi site and he does mention Italian hybridizer Lorena Montanari, but nothing about claragarden or the registered owner of the domain name, Daniele Bilancioni.

Lilli... Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! Let's hope they don't ship Crossing Fingers!

William, glad you brought this up. I booked marked their website last year but didn't order from them for the reasons you have already stated the main one being the vague disclosure about shipping costs. Nevertheless, I am sure they ship to the EU - Switzerland may be a problem but that is why I have a delivery address in Germany.
Tom is right though, if one of us tried with a small order, we would know for sure. They do have a great selection!

Sharlene, I'm also looking forward to see what Bianco will have for next year. I loved the quality of the rhizomes he sent me in July and I can hardly wait to see how his hybrids will behave in my climate.

Lilli, I also made a list, but I can't see myself placing more than one more order for next season, if I even will do that. I don't want to stress over finding a place for them, worry about spending too much money or packages getting lost in the mail. Irises are fun and I want to keep it that way. Apparently the shipping with Claragarden is at the buyers risk, so this is another unknown factor as well.

OK, there are a few in Claragarden's lists that I really want, so I'll be the guinea-pig volunteer. Hilarious! I won't order many and I'll keep you all informed... first thing I may do is send an enquiry about more precise shipping costs.

I was a bit surprised to see the amount of personal info you have to submit in order to buy anything at Claragarden, so I've been using google translate to check the privacy/data policy. They reserve the right to pass on your info to third parties, etc., and say if you don't agree you can't buy. And William's right, they are using photos in breach of copyright... doesn't inspire confidence.

So sorry, guys, Claragarden isn't for me! They might be completely fine, but I'm not risking it. If anyone else decides to buy from them, I'll be very interested to see how it goes. Sad
