We broke the 1889 record for Christmas at 76°F. It was partly sunny with a breeze out of the South. It felt like Spring.
I dug up my 'The Mighty Mo' and moved it into full sun. It was planted in 2013, but an ornamental weeping crab tree had started to shade it too much. It came up easily. I did not divide it.

I want to move Garden Treasure this next fall and am really nervous about it. It has been in the same spot for around four years or so. I don't want to try to divide it, just move it to a spot with full sun. It has three to five huge blooms each year even where it is. And it is my last peony to bloom here.

I need to move 4 peonies, at least to re-plant them to improve the soil there. I read that it is recommended to divide roots or at least to prune them. I also read that it was not necessary. I wonder what experience people here have with replanting not old peonies (3-4 years old).

I really think it depends on the variety and how little you can disturb the roots when moving them, Anya. If the roots are compact and without woody, dead stuff in the middle it probably won't make a huge amount of difference. I've had some that I've dug that practically divided themselves. I'd play it by ear. Have you considered just top dressing them to improve the soil?

LG, These are my first peonies which I planted 8, 7, 6, and 5 years ago and then I did not know that peonies grow roots so wide. I made holes a little wider than big pots in which I bought them from a local nursery and there is no good space where they can expand. I wanted to use an empty "lawn" and adorn it with beautiful peonies but it turned out that this lawn is a place for a small potential building - there is a thick layer of gravel under turf. I need to take away all gravel and make good spots for the peonies with amended soil, our soil is pure silt. No wonder the peonies grow so slowly and only two of them hardly bloom (Kansas and Duchess de Nemours). I'll dig at least the youngest that do not bloom in the fall and see what the roots are, they should not be large, the plants have only 4 big leaves.

Anya, when I dig my really old peonies I divide them as that is recommended by athe American Peony Society. These peonies I moved over Christmas were not that old. I have been doing this in early winter because we are so mild. I make sure that I put them in buckets of water as soon as I wash off the old dirt. You don't want those fine roots exposed to air as they will die. I dig the new holes first, but sometimes the root comes up larger than I estimated and I have to enlarge the new hole before I place it.

It sounds like you need to find a new place to relocate your peonies. I have no knowledge of the gardening challenges faced by you and Mary Stella up in Alaska.
