My daughter has owned this plant for well over 3 years, and wants to know the type and care of it. She has already replanted it in the past, and now, in her apartment at college, it has grown some mold on top and she is not sure why.

It looks to me to be a "Corn Plant". I find them to be tough and hard to harm. That one seems generally healthy but a bit leggy; perhaps it needs more light.

Looks like Dracaena Janet Craig.

Maybe the media is getting too soggy wet, give more intervals to watering frequency, and also check if that container has drain holes.

It sounds like your daughter does know how to take care of it, she's done something right for 3 years. Moldy soil (and gnats) are a sign that the potting soil is staying too wet.

Corn plant and Dracaena Janet Craig are the same plant - Dracaena fragrans
