I recently received a catalog from Gardens Alive! which offered some useful looking products for adding biology (beneficial soil bacteria and fungi) to the plant containers. The soil amendments could be an alternative to setting up a worm composting bin to harvest worm castings.

I unfortunately didn't get to try the products shown above this year.

I had good results using fertilizer which has as an ingredient beneficial soil bacteria such as is in Jobe's organic fertilizers. Their trade name for the bacteria is BioZome. Read about it here:

I also dipped the roots into mycorrhizal fungi powder, specifically, this product.
