I am not usually a fan of tiny plants and flowers.. but I was smitten with this little one and that screw was just drilled through a plain piece of stained pine.. I might have painted the screw.. but I would never have thought of this technology in a million years!

Whoa, I was thinking that was some sort of threaded rod. A screw??? Wow, that is a tiny plant and a very clever way to display it. .

I'm packing up my empty crates to go orchid shopping in Miami this weekend at the huge Tamiami show.
I've got a crate full of divisions I've made for my sister and I'm taking a last look at the bench and see that
Rhyncholaeliocattleya Edith North 'Danny Adams' is going to pop open any minute now!

This one of my original plants from 2011.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but there is a degree of anticipation...

When I repotted and divided the orchids I was given last year, I potted up the backbulbs to see if I could "strike" them and grow new plants. It has been exciting over the past few weeks to find these shoots appearing, especially as I understand backbulbs generally take around 6 months to send up new growths Smiling

Cym. Alexanderi - potted up 15th October 2016
Thumb of 2017-01-12/Australis/4b50c1

Cym. Ceres - potted up 15th October 2016
Thumb of 2017-01-12/Australis/82bfa6

Cym. lowianum - the first new shoot has emerged in the last day or two; repotted 7th November 2016
Thumb of 2017-01-12/Australis/529f8d

NOID Cym. B - not sure exactly when this was repotted (probably September-ish, as it had no flower spike), but the first shoot appeared around the 26th of December, so this is just under 3 weeks' growth. Hopefully the parent plant will flower this winter and I'll be able to identify them.
Thumb of 2017-01-12/Australis/99f60e

NOID Cym. C - another with no flower spike, probably repotted around September-October; first shoot probably appeared around the 24th of December. Unfortunately lost track of which plant these came from, so these really are complete unknowns!
Thumb of 2017-01-12/Australis/1b3a28

There are several more pots of NOID backbulbs that I am keenly awaiting to see if they will send up shoots or not.

I can get mine to that point, but maybe water to early(?), because they always seem to rot at that stage.

I'll probably have a lot of rot come spring. Most of my orchids are under cover, but not the Cyms and Sobralias. All my other potted plants are drowning. Now I'm just hoping we don't get any heavy winds as that avocado tree could take out my house if it were to fall. Crossing Fingers!

If It makes it through Feb. it will be removed for sure. I've been waffling on that, and I love the tree, but ...It's been so long since we've had any hazardous weather that I've put if off. Now I'm seeing how much damage it could do.

Thanks all.

Carol - I have been watering these (although not as often as the other Cyms) and there seems to be a correlation between watering them and the appearance of the new growths. Perhaps here they needed the moisture?

That's what I thought too, but the new growths are rotting. I need to do some research. This is from a favorite one that I've had for about 30 years, and is slowly declining. I'm really trying to save/ reproduce it.

I have a pot of Cymbidium backbulbs my daughter gave me. They are from a plant I gave her a few years ago. She forgot to bring it in one night when the temps got down to 20. We thought the plant was a goner but let it sit for awhile - when the bulbs didn't rot, we potted them up. I can't remember what color it is. I'll know in a year or two. Smiling

I have another Cym that I grew from a backbulb I found someplace. Its going to bloom for the first time this year. Hurray! Because I can't remember where I got it even. It took almost two years to decide to grow. Plus another 3 or so years to decide to bloom. It better be a pretty one.

Photos to follow. Not tonight. Its snowing. Again.

We have gotten 5.25 inches of rain (that's not counting snow, just rain) since January 1! And about 12 inches of snow. My rain gage doesn't measure snow because it usually evaporates instead of melting.

I've been moving plants that can take the cold in the garage to just dry out a bit. The rain and cold has kept everything wet for weeks now. No real drying going on even for the few days it doesn't rain. Of course all the mounted cold weather guys are loving it

Daisy, you have a beautiful spot there on top of the world. That is the sight we expected to see when we landed in Reno. Shrug!
