Thank You! robin, didn't know what to expect for blooming season here in socal. guess you'll learn along with me, as i post from time to time. i am learning, too, about what to expect. (from the local iris society that i joined in sept.)

i didn't know that blooming would start so early in s.d., especially after i had those blooms in the fall, of 'perfectionist', 'saxon', and 'tiger play'. thought there would be a few months in-between the rebloomers and the spring bloomers? but i have a happy💓.

think this means that my season will end a lot sooner than everyone elses?

the local sdis have a birthday meeting every february, and i think it's to celebrate the club's inception. altho' i am not sure of the reason for the celebration, i'll find out more about the party in a couple of weeks. i also found out that ginny spoon is the featured speaker(???).

i've heard that name tossed about on this forum, but since i've been out of the iris loop for more than 12 years, i've got a lot of iris 📖information catch-up to do. Sticking tongue out

on a separate post i was going to list the names of some of the irises that are blooming at this time.....if anyone is interested? if not i won't. there are quite a few, and i am afraid i've never heard of them before (but that's not saying much Rolling on the floor laughing )

Post away, Daphne. Smiling

Ginny and Don Spoon are both hybridizers and own Winterberry Irises. I have bought many irises from them and many that they created. Very knowledgeable. You will enjoy.

I am guessing it's short for people from San Diego?

😀lilli and robin, the only two that were my blooms were posted earlier in the thread: 'autumn explosion' & 'pinkness'....... Angel i don't have that many irises, yet. ( notice i said, "yet".) Hilarious! but limited space does preclude me from getting too many. i have too many now, and will have to cull after the blooming season gets in full swing. i want to see the blossoms first, before they become someone else's Rolling on the floor laughing .

i said i was only going to order three this season, but i think i may end up with eight that i ordered. plus, if they send "bonuses" i may have many more than i'll know where to place? Whistling

"sdis" i am sorry, i thought i had said, is the acronym for the 'san diego iris society' i joined in september 2016. i joined the organization to learn about irises in my neck of the woods.

unfortunately, most of it's members live 1 1/2 hr. (by car either east or south of me) and their climactic conditions are very different than mine. they live in more desert conditions than i. their weather is 10-15+ degrees warmer than mine, and 10 - 20 deg. colder. they are able to grow the tinier ones because i am nearer to the coast and lack the colder conditions needed to set buds.

there are no other members in the club in my immediate area, so i guess i will just have to experiment on my own without the help of someone more knowledgeable that i can call on for help.

for example, someone in the club told me that she's very sucessful with tb pinks, because of the heat. whereas, i thought because of their delicate color they would do better nearer to the ocean with the cloud cover. i Lovey dubby Lovey dubby Lovey dubby the pinks, and am soooo disappointed with the news. but i do have about 10 or so, and half of them 'self'. we will just have to wait. 'pinkness' as noted, was the 2nd iris to bloom in my garden in 2017(it's maiden bloom) so will have to take notes on the future performance of it.

[edit: both photos 'autumn explosion' and 'pinkness' are on pg. 1 of this thread]

Thanks for repeating yourself daphne Smiling
Our weather is similar and my pinks grow just as well as my other colours so yours should be fine.

'Autumn Explosion' is a good grower for me, so I wouldn't be surprised if it outgrew the rot easily Daphne. I'll be curious to see how long your season is down south.. Although I'll bet you'll have more rebloom because of the extended season than some of the colder climates.

One of my clumps of 'Crimson King' is blooming now... Let the season begin!

I equally love and have raging jealousy when the new year's bloom season starts since I'm still at minimum 3 1/2 months from my mdb blooms Lovey dubby :grumbling:

I love Autumn Explosion. My Celestial Explosion bloomed beautifully last spring but since has been having a tough time. It got a little rot and I had to divide it early. I wonder if Autumn Explosion would be a little hardier. I also requested Dark Storm as a possible bonus from Superstition and it is supposed to be a darker version of Celestial Explosion.

I've always wanted a darker version of celestial explosion and I have it on my list of future crosses to create. I am looking forward to seeing Dark Storm. I think the chances of it reaching Australia are slim now that Barry Blyth is retiring so I will probably still try to create my own one day.

Your 'Daughter of Stars' is a Spoon iris so Ginny will be interested in its early bloom in your climate. She lives in VA remember.

I have never been a 'pink person' but I like pink SDBS & Barry Blyth has good on producing those. WE must wait until May.

My misguided Daffys are sending up bloom stalks, and buds are shaping. They always end up frozen, poor things. I hope this doesn't mean my dwarfs will start early!

I have a few daffodil buds sticking a yellow petal out to see if its ok to open. I keep telling them to 'RUN, HIDE' but to no avail. I have not checked the irises. I hope they have more sense than the daffys (pun intended).
