Hi,
A couple of weeks ago we harvested and juiced the remainder of the oranges from our trees. We immediately froze the juice. This week we thawed one of the containers of juice and it had an odor of sulfur, but the taste was still really fresh. What causes this and is our OJ safe to drink?

I would think its safe to drink .
The odor is probably from something in frig or freezer. Bottle you put it in. Handling. One orange was a little moldy.
You get the ideal ???

I did some research and others have complained of this problem. I found one scientific article and asked my chemist daughter to translate what I read.

Here's what I learned: All OJ and grapefruit juice contain sulfur (and are part of the flavor of fresh OJ). The amount of sulfur in OJ is in parts per billion but the human nose can detect even that.

My daughter suspects that if you had taken a little longer to pack and freeze your OJ, the sulfur would have diffused before you froze the juice. She suggests you pour it back and forth between two containers or shake it vigorously and pour it into another container. You are trying to get rid of the 'bubbles' of sulfur by aeration.

Hope this helps. And let us know if this works. We've never had to de-sulfur OJ before.

Good job tracking that down, Daisy! I did some looking around, too, but didn't come across that little tidbit. Interesting! I guess there is such a thing as "too fresh," eh? Hilarious!

My husband makes fresh OJ and freezes it every year - he has never had the sulfur problem. But, before he freezes OJ, he puts it in the blender as he doesn't like the pulp.

It did answer a question for me though. I can't use any product with citrus in it without getting a rash. But I can drink my Hubby's OJ. I am allergic to sulfur but didn't know that was my problem with citrus.
