ARUBA1334 said:I think my favorite Cross from 2012 was the (Smoke and Thunder x Class Ring) 12-12 it has given me quite a few fun plants in all different colors and patterns and they are proving so far to be excellent growers and hardy along with blooming through our tough seasons. There are a couple that really stood out in the garden again this year. My favorite of the bunch being 12-12 B it is unique enough blend of colors I don't have anything else like it and the stalks were good it held up well in the downpours this spring. Here are some pictures of it from the past couple years.

12-12 B

12-12 A This one was really neat as well it lacks the ruffles but the colors are unique and every bloom can be a little different color on the falls it was crossed with a lot of the Ghio blood hoping to get more modern form and a branch if all goes well there should be quite a few seedlings blooming from this one in the spring.

Brad, I'd be happy if any of those seedlings came up in my garden. I can see the Ghio influence in many of them.. Great form and ruffles.

I have to say... anyone growing bananas in your region is in serious zonal denial.. Hilarious! Or maybe you've just gone bananas after all that digging.. hard to say Whistling

I think we're all looking forward to future pictures of your Iris, and your garden.

Thanks Everybody for the kind words !! This cross was a lot of fun watching them open such a good blend of colors unfortunately most are very short on buds and branching but about everything that bloomed seemed to be weird this year hard to decide what to keep, so I decided to give them another year to perform so most are still here and there is a lot of some of them so Shrug! will see what they look like in the spring.

Jan.. Funny you ask Rolling on the floor laughing I normally eat the same-thing every morning a couple eggs with an apple, trying to stick to a diet Grumbling the past few months but most mornings I get to use this to get the day started Thank You again !!
Thumb of 2017-01-07/ARUBA1334/961006

Barbara.. Thank You Smiling I was sad when I read the news about Barry retiring will miss his catalog every year, my hope is he will continue to hybridize in Oregon Smiling and we can still enjoy his creations they are truly one of a kind.. My new field is proving to be a challenge or at least it was this year the midwest is tough on plants we have such extremes here but maybe one day I will be able to help Whistling but in the meanwhile you will have plenty of gorgeous things to choose from out of Oregon and Santa Cruz. I had a great time taking pictures of seedlings in Salem lot's to share there are some wonderful things coming form there in the next couple years.

Bonnie.. Thank You Big Grin I wish the plants were as good as the flowers so far only a couple of them show promise a number of them were crossed last year so will see what the next generation brings in the spring Smiling

Gabe.. There was no good way to fix drainage in the field besides trenching in tile lines and I had enough of that in the back yard D'Oh! the rows are high enough they never sat in water but over the next couple years I will probably move them all again to the back of the property it is more flat and I can hopefully control the erosion better. I was spoiled for a lot of years in our old home we sat down in a valley out of the wind, and was surrounded by trees to help block some of it, my gardens were all in berms and had edging which helped keep the dirt from moving. The field setting seemed like it would be so much easier to work in but I was wrong, Farming is difficult anywhere in the country but the midwest can be very challenging especially in a wide open setting like I am now.

Debra.. Thank You.. it bloomed for the 1st time this spring and I liked it, there are probably quite a few in that same color range out there but I didn't have anything else like it bloom this year.. The 1st couple shown 12-12 A and B were favorites because of the uniqueness in there colors, I want to find new color combinations and patterns in my seedlings so that if planted on opposite ends of the garden we can id them without looking at a tag Smiling and those fit that description.

Leslie.. nodding Rolling on the floor laughing The last brown one was another 1st year bloomer and I thought it was the best in that color range of the browns in the group it had nice wide falls and stood out just needs some more ruffles Smiling

Sherry.. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing nodding I am in definite zone denial..You should have seen the look on visitors face's when they saw them growing this year they were huge Smiling most of time the response I got was I didn't know you could grow Banana Trees in Iowa and my reply was they are fine until Late October then they need dug and moved inside Confused they probably thought I was crazy nodding but for my climate there is nothing else that grows that fast and makes that kind of a impact in the garden well worth the extra work.
Joe's plants are awesome !! and I am excited to see next years bloom a lot of my 2014 seedlings were mixed with his newer creations Big Grin to add better form. I am planning on visiting Santa Cruz again in April now that I got the house project done, looking forward to visiting the group at the MBIS show again hopefully will get to meet you in person this year at the show.

Brad, I like every single characteristic in that purple from the shade of purple(s), to the subtle color blends, to the velvety texture of the falls, to that remarkable beard. Lovey dubby

One of my favorites of Joe's over the past couple years is (Enjoyment) Lovey dubby it is one of the most ruffled plants in my garden, has a good branch and has looked good in Oregon and California so I have done a lot of work with it the past couple years, mixing it with Blyth and Keppel plants and some of my own seedlings hoping for that form in all kinds of colors and patterns. It seems to be really fertile both ways and I had a lot of seedlings germinate from it last year and lined out this spring some of those are the most anticipated here in the coming spring Smiling

13-95 (Enjoyment X Electric Candy) Only 3 out of 20 bloomed this year the yellow one was my favorite and a very nice bright color in the garden this spring, it sent up 2 stalks mid way through the season unfortunately we had a week straight of heavy rain and wind so it was beat on badly so unable to evaluate much other than great color impact and it had a nice stalk.

13-23 (Enjoyment X All My Dreams) Looking forward to seeing more from this combo in the spring as well none bloomed this year but the idea behind it was too add some ruffles to All My Dreams it is a fantastic color in the garden if you like Oranges and a good grower for us but I want to give it some Bubble Ruffles Smiling so far just this one out of the combo.

Not sure how Enjoyment x Electric Candy produced that yellow ( the odd wonders of genetics) but it is fantastic. If your seedlings were for sale I would surely be broke.

I think that yellow one is my favorite of them all, so bright, and the one right after it with the markings on the shoulders of the falls is awesome too. But then I like the white one with the orange shoulders. . . I guess I like them all. Sighing! Lovey dubby Although I've had some with nice branching the first year they bloomed, many don't do so well that first year, but seem to do better the next year. Some have much better ruffles the second year too. I can't wait to see yours in future years. If they improve from what they are, they will blow us away for sure. Smiling

I love the yolk color standards and rims of the falls. It's self complimenting for sure. Thumb of 2017-01-08/ARUBA1334/7db738

Recently, I've been really like haft marks on falls. What I really like more is the brown/grey rim on the standards and the veins leading up to the top. Love this one!

(Terracotta Bay x Class Ring) This is another cross from 2012 done looking for reds my notes say I lined out 75 plants from these 2 and half of them didn't survive the deep freeze that passed through Iowa in 2014 but what has bloomed has been interesting, definitely a wide range of colors and patterns. I had 3 bloom last year that were really nice and these 8 this year that were not as good but it was fun to watch them bloom even got a plicata out the bunch Smiling

Sherry.. I would Love to have some of mine grow in Santa Cruz but 1st we gotta get them to survive and flourish here Smiling

Jan.. Thank You !! I'm ready for a vacation nodding

Tom.. Thanks they certainly can look different and weather plays a lot into it especially the 1st couple years.. I'm hoping to get to see a lot of them again next year they had all year to get established.

Gabe.. The yellow one was a favorite this season for the color impact with so very few blooming it was nice to get something to stand out.. The 2nd one didn't make it..
But Mr Keppel has one in that color range Big Grin that is mentioned as a possibility for next year and his was Awesome !!

Gabe.. I did a few crosses with Terracotta Bay it is a really neat color in the garden and I like it because it blooms so late here.. but from what I have seen out of the seedlings there were some good colors but only a couple has produced anything with a good bud count which is the problem with a lot of these in the cross they bloom with 4 or 5 buds and no branch, the 3rd one down with the yellow in the standards was Beautiful this year and got a lot of attention from visitors, it grew like a weed but every stalk had 5 buds Sad to quick of a bloom season we need more flowers.. The other side Class Ring I will definitely be working with it or at least it's kids that Kieth has introduced it is excellent.
