I am browsing the Territorial Seed catalog at 1am like any normal person and I see that they offer patchouli plants.

I am a dirty gay hippie and my heart goes aflutter. Has anybody here ever grown this? I live in Pennsylvania, so I would have to bring it in during the winter. I'm just wondering who, if anybody, has experience growing this herb? If I order it, what should I expect? For some reason it does not seem to be very popular.

No idea on care. If it's a runner type mint like spearment, peppermint etc, - I don't have good luck with those in pots. But other mint relatives are great in pots, (Plectranthus.. ) so you may have to just try it.

I've never tried to grow it, but I recall someone mentioning it in an article here. It was by way of a cautionary tale...

Jai - I grew it in a pot for a couple of years. I think I got it from Companion Plants in OH as a plant rather than seed. I did like the fragrance but now I can't remember what happened to the plant. I think it got too hot in the little GH in the winter - up on the top of a cabinet in the sun. Probably forgot to water it. Took it outside in warm weather and brought it inside for the winter. It does get a little gnarly-looking after pruning it often but you can start cuttings when that happens.

Thank you all. I am definitely going to try it this spring and see what happens. At the worst, it won't work.

After I did a bit more research I see that some places online offer seeds but Territorial Seed only offers plants. Does anybody have an idea as to why this would be? I'm guessing it has to do with the mode of propagation (i.e. Territorial Seed took a bunch of cuttings to sell as plants later on) but I'd like to have a second brain tell me what they (you) think.

I think it's simply a less common plant, so growing plants for sale is not as justified as selling seed. (more care, more space..)

I managed to find some seeds and bought 5. I planted them on a heating pad in bright indoor lighting. I've read that it takes 3-21 days for germination. We'll see.

If they don't sprout then I'll order the plant from Territorial Seed. At 1am, of course...

Will do. Right now the seeds are still dormant (no sprouts). I've read that they can take up to 2 weeks to sprout so I'm not worried...yet.

Patchouli grows in the garden here, but does die back even in our very mild winters, so I'd think you will need to keep it in a pot and bring it in for winter. Or take cuttings each fall, and start yourself some fresh plants, which I think is what I'd do. They get sort of scruffy and weedy looking if you keep them going too long which is why I don't grow it in the garden any more.

They do smell really nice though.
