I have a question about this plant. I cannot find it in the American Horticultural Society "A--Z" Garden Plants encyclopedia under any of its names. My wife suggests that this is because this is not considered a "garden plant," but rather an invasive weed. Can anyone comment on whether or not this is a desirable "shrub" for a garden setting? Thanks.

I agree
You might also try searches for the more commonly used names which are now synonyms.
Persicaria alpina
Persicaria polymorpha
Polygonum polymorphum
