For the longest time, the book mark I used in FF, went directly to my customized home page. I don't know if something changed or if my computer tech did something on my computer last night, but I can no longer get to my customized home page without logging into NGA.

The url that shows on the customized home page is the same as the generic url that I see when I look up NGA on Google.

How can I change my book mark so that I don't have to log in every time I come back to the site ?

Hi Lyn,

You'll have to log into NGA again in order to access your customised homepage. The way it works is that your browser remembers that you've logged in for a set amount of time; after this amount of time (might be a week, month, 6 months, or even a year), the file containing this login information (called a "cookie") expires and you have to log in again. Alternatively, these "cookies" can be removed if you (or your computer techie) clears the browser's cache (where the browser stores temporary files to speed up website use); if you browse in private mode, then they never get kept at all.

Once you log in again, your bookmark should take you back to your customised homepage. Please let me know if this doesn't work.

Kind Regards,
Joshua.

Thank you, Joshua ...

I understand cookies, but thank you for taking the time to explain them just in case I didn't understand them ... Smiling

I am having to sign in every time I enter the site. I've checked my browser settings and it is supposed to be saving cookies, so .... I'll be talking with my tech guy ... Smiling

You're welcome.

Do you have ad-blocking or privacy addons installed? Sometimes these can block cookies.

Also, check if Firefox is set to clear the cache when it exits.

Yes, I do have ad-blocking, but I've always had ad-blocking, so something else has triggered this.

I do have FF set to clear the cache when it exits, but I also have it set to remember my browsing history.

The only other variable that could possibly have an impact is that I am using a Linux operating system. However, I have been using it for a few months and haven't had this issue, so I doubt if the operating system is causing the problem.

Really, the question in my mind is the bookmarking more than anything else. Both the customized home page and the home page when accessed from Google have the same url. That seems kind of strange to me.

That's pretty common, Lyn. Many websites now are designed to respond to the presence of a login cookie. If the cookie exists, the page is built according to that user's preferences. If it doesn't, it loads a default version of the page.

Thank you. I guess this is the first time I actually noticed the url. Naturally ... this is the first time I've been having this issue ... Smiling

My tech and I will work it out tomorrow now that I am certain it is on my end.

Thanks for your patience.

Hey Lyn, when you figure it out, please update us here just in case someone else is having the problem but not sure how or what to ask.

Sure, Rick. It is odd. My tech had done some other work on my computer, but it should not have triggered this kind of problem. That's why I want to check back with him. I thought it was important that I could tell him that I knew for certain that it was on my end and not a site issue before I saw him.

I am glad we did a back up before he started working ... Smiling

Maybe it's just set to clear the cookies after you close your browser, that is usually a different setting than retaining your browsing history. He might have set it that way while working on it and forgot to set it back to the way you had it when done. I have my browser set to clear all the cookies when I close my browser except for specific sites that I "whitelist" like this one.

Thanks, Mogan. I checked that when I checked my browser settings before I asked my question in my initial post.

I don't mind cookies because I am not on unknown sites often when I am on the net. Also, using Linux makes me less vulnerable to a lot of the problems I would have, if I were using a more common platform.

For me, it is a puzzle.

I promised @RickM to come back and let people know what triggered the problem I was having with having to sign in every time I used the NGA site.

I met with my computer tech yesterday and we went through everything that he had worked on before I started having the problem. (We had to re-schedule our appointment because something came up so it took us a while to get together.)

It turns out the problem was a Firefox issue. R had changed my preference setting to remember my browsing history, so that FF would not remember my browsing history. Since the urls are the same, the non-customized home page came up and I had to sign into the site to get to my customized home page.

btw ... I am glad I changed to the Linux operating system. R told me that Microsoft has put the word out that it is no longer supporting the initial version of MS 10 and is requiring an upgrade.

Thanks for letting us know, Lyn. At least it was something straightforward!

Sorry to contradict your support guy Lyn, but...

Client operating systems Latest update or service pack End of mainstream support End of extended support
Windows XP Service Pack 3 April 14, 2009 April 8, 2014
Windows Vista Service Pack 2 April 10, 2012 April 11, 2017
Windows 7* Service Pack 1 January 13, 2015 January 14, 2020
Windows 8 Windows 8.1 January 9, 2018 January 10, 2023
Windows 10, released in July 2015** N/A October 13, 2020 October 14, 2025

What he's probably referring to is that MS used to issue updates called Service Packs. Now, the just openly change the version number (Win 8/Win 8.1)

These updates happen when ever MS has enough patches or feature changes to warrant calling it a new version.

I've been involved with MS operating systems since the early 1980s.

Rick .. thanks for the information.

I don't mind being corrected. You had better information to share ... Smiling

I haven't kept up at all since I retired. Moving to a new operating system has been a challenge, but I am still glad I made the change.

I used the predecessor to Linux many, many years ago. It was called Unix and was developed by Bell Labs. (And who remembers the Bell System?) As I moved from the main frame world to desktops, linux didn't exist and when it did, there was no graphical interface and very little available in terms of applications. Maybe someday I'll start playing around with the modern version. I'm just not in the mood to learn that stuff all over again. Sighing!
