Thread OP

Hi Y'all!

I recently bought property in Pahrump, NV and my land 1.1 acres is trimmed with bamboo.

It actually grows wild out here for some odd reason, and it's everywhere.

Does anyone know what kind of bamboo this is? They need TLC and I want to learn more about them.

Thank You!

Its not really bamboo but a really big reed called Arundo donax. It has always been the bane of Central California and seems to have made its way to S. Nevada.

It sounds and looks as if the previous owner might have planted that Giant Reed around your property as a privacy screen. Out there in the blasted desert, it probably will only grow where you are able to water it, so maybe it won't be the invasive pest plant that it is elsewhere? So, what's your irrigation water situation? It might appear to be growing wild right now because of all that extra rain you've had recently - or did it get that far inland?

From reading the links above, it doesn't sound like you'll have to do anything to "take care of it" other than watering, unless you want to get rid of it, and that might take a blowtorch, and then a friend with a backhoe.

Do you like it enough to spend time and effort on watering it?

Nobody plants it. There is a lot of water in the desert but it's all underground - Carla managed to buy a piece where the water is closer to the surface.

Carla, did you move from out of the area to Pahrump? Have you checked into creeping in the aquifer from the nuclear test sites to the Amargosa Valley? Luckily, you are further from it. Beatty is the town with the big problems.

My Grandmother and Uncle lived in Pahrump for 40 years.

Daisy, we can attach photos to posts in NGA forums, but not files like PDFs.

My guess at the reason for that is that files may carry viruses, so Dave doesn't want to harbor them on the forum. Just a guess.

Thanks Guys for the resonses. Man, I thought I was going to become a bamboo farmer!

Dasiyl, I bought my property over by the lakeside casino. I am hooked up to the aquifer, and have no water bill. The water on my property is extremely cold and clean. I Love it!!

The reed that's here is very tall. Some reaching 12 to 15'. I've been digging up baby shoots and moving them to areas that are naked.

Well now I know what this is. Kindaclet down but at least I know what I'm working with.

I tip my hat to you.

I'm not sure you want to encourage the Giant Reeds. Most people are trying to figure out how to get rid of it.
