Welcome!

My guess would be a broomrape (Orobanche). I don't know which one though, there are some Google pictures here.

There are also some pictures in the NGA database.

It reminds me of Soldier Orchid (Zeuxine strateumatica)

We lived in the Daytona Beach, Fl area for 43 years and I'd find them popping up in the lawn on occasion as well as in with a couple of container plants ... always in December and January.

Cool! I want orchids to pop up in my lawn. Oh, wait, no lawn. (Not to mention the foot of snow on the ground this morning).

Daisy, Wow a foot of snow on the ground? I didn't realize it got that cold in Reno. We've been in the low and mid 80's down this way but it's supposed to be cooler tonight and tomorrow night too with lows in the 40's! Hurray! I can sleep with the windows open!

Re: Lawns; I'd love to do away with all lawn and have a natural landscape but my husband unfortunately grew up with the expanse of green lawn and I still have not been able to convince him to get rid of it.

If your hubby had to pay the water bills that we have on the west coast, he would be more than willing to remove the lawn.

Yep, I was paying over $100 a month to water a postage stamp sized lawn.

This is what it looked like this morning - I'm pretty sure my driveway is down there:

Carol, we have friends who live in southern Ca. and it amazes me at the cost of living on the west coast! We are very fortunate that our water bill here only runs about $28 a month and we don't have to use city water for irrigation! We have a deep well for watering the lawn; no cost except for the initial investment of the well and the pump. Of course it takes electricity to power the pump but we don't have to irrigate all the time. Like most states now, Florida has permanent, year-round watering restrictions. Here in our city, even with an irrigation well, we can only water once a week between the hours of 4 and 8 a.m.

The major difference is that you get summer rains. Our season begins Oct. 1st and we get nothing during summer. My total for 12 months was 4.98" last year. Fortunately, I've gotten more than that in Jan. this year.
