My wife and I have a wisteria plant that has grown over top of our small back porch. We want to move it away from the house and are thinking of building a pergola and attempting to move the vines. Will this damage the plant? Should we trim the plant? Any suggestions?

I would suggest you get it off your house. It is fully capable of pulling that little roof down. It is really hard to damage wisteria so do with it as you like to save your house.

Re: trying to relocate the vine...
Personally, I'd do everything I could to kill the stuff... as porkpal mentioned, it's aggressive as anything, and when it gets away from you, can do tremendous damage... If people compared chinese wisteria with kudzu, they'd be shocked at how much worse the wisteria is...

The comments to my article about wisteria are fairly informative:

But... if you really, really like the vine that you have... it's likely that after getting it off the house, you will find that you still have plenty in the garden...

And... it roots from the vines, forming all the new plants that anyone could possibly wish for....
