Wondering if you could make a small trench for your vegetable and fruit refuse to accomplish the same thing. Interesting idea.

Great idea! It also keeps the critters from rummaged through the pile.

As far as a cap, cut the bottom out of a milk/soda/juice jug and slip it over the top. Not only do you get the pipe covered, you also have a handy scoop at the ready!

I don't see why not, Rj -- and it would be a lot less trouble. Of course, then you wouldn't have people asking "what the heck is that tube sticking up in your garden?" Hilarious!
