I thought I'd get us started for February since I don't see a new thread yet for this month. A couple of pictures from my backyard this morning:

Thanks for the new thread, Lin! I haven't been outside much because I've just been exhausted so I had to use a photo from a few days ago just to start the new butterfly thread!

I'm pretty sure I have a resident pair of Cardinals. Every morning I open the door, they're either in the Jatropha, the Black Cherry, or attacking my side mirror (the male, anyway). I need to look up what a Cardinal nest looks like because I'm curious if they're nesting here.

I had the sun in my eyes the other day when I went to Starbucks, and I kind of did today, too. But I'm pretty sure there are two Limpkins back in the area where the apple snails lay their eggs. I'll see if I can find them when traffic isn't so busy and I can pull over in the little office park.

My birdfeeder is getting pretty low on seed! We definitely seemed to have a slow down period here in Florida, but hopefully, everyone is seeing more visitors lately. Thumbs up

Melanie, I hope you are able to get photos of the Limpkins! I used to see them behind our house in Daytona Beach and they are such neat birds!

Bird activity was practically zero around here for a long while but finally I'm seeing them visit the feeders again!

Regarding the Northern Cardinal nesting habits, from the Audubon page:

"Nest: Usually well hidden in dense shrubs, vines, or low trees, placed 3-10' above ground, sometimes higher. Nest (built by female) is open cup made of twigs, weeds, grass, bark strips, leaves, rootlets, lined with fine grass or hair."

And, from the Cornell site:
"Northern Cardinals nest in dense tangles of shrubs and vines."

And, from Wikipedia:
"Males sometimes bring nest material to the female, who does most of the building. She crushes twigs with her beak until they are pliable, then turns in the nest to bend the twigs around her body and push them into a cup shape with her feet. The cup has four layers: coarse twigs (and sometimes bits of trash) covered in a leafy mat, then lined with grapevine bark and finally grasses, stems, rootlets, and pine needles. The nest typically takes three to nine days to build; the finished product is 5.1–7.6 cm (2.0–3.0 in) tall, 10.1 cm (4.0 in) across, with an inner diameter of about 7.6 cm (3.0 in). Cardinals do not usually use their nests more than once. The female builds a cup nest in a well-concealed spot in dense shrub or a low tree 1–3 m (3.3–9.8 ft) off the ground. The nest is made of thin twigs, bark strips, and grasses, lined with grasses or other plant fibers.[19] Eggs are laid one to six days following the completion of the nest."

Thanks Mika but *Blush* it's all luck ... I just point and shoot and what I get is what I get. Rolling on the floor laughing That being said, regarding light and shadows; I do like how some of my photos come out compared to others!

Have fun in London ... a place I've always wanted to visit, I hope you get to take some photos to share!

That's what I was thinking. Is that one of those shots for rabies? Ouch - at least the dinner and cocktails should counter balance it Whistling Whistling

Mika, Oh my ... were you subjected to a rabid animal?

I don't even drink but if I had to get that series of injections to prevent rabies, I'd probably have to have many cocktails!

I'm seeing lots of Red-bellied Woodpeckers lately; this is a female, possibly a juvenile.

Gorgeous photos of the red-bellies there Lin. I've been wondering if the red belly comes and goes according to perhaps mating seasons? My pair of red-bellied woodpeckers have been AWOL lately. Although, I have seen a definite resurgence of the other usual suspects back at the bird feeders.

Elaine, I used to see them at our feeders year-round in Daytona. Here they went AWOL for about a month or a little more.

No, it's because we're going on safari next week and I can't resist animals... so it's just preventative. I had a course of jabs some years ago before another trip and now need a booster. But I do promise not to stroke the lions! Big Grin

Thumbs up Here in the U.S. I hear of people having to get a series of preventive rabies injections if they've come into contact with a rabid animal; never thought about it as a preventative for someone going on safari but it makes sense!

The Bald Eagles have really recovered around here near Seattle, they are all over the place. Yesterday I realized I can see a nest from my window, although once the leaves are out I won't be able to see it anymore. Rats. I would have bought a telescope if I could see into it when there are eaglets.
I was driving a country road near here when I saw this nest in a tree growing by the road, then I saw there was an Eagle perched there too. I took this photo with my Iphone. This just shows how they are entirely adjusted to human activity. Don't park under that tree- I once had an Eagle poop on my car when it flew over- the splatter extended from front to back, quite a job to wash it off!

Quick question. Is it against the rules to post pictures of eggs in these threads? I don't have a good enough camera to get pictures of birds but in the spring time I do like to take pictures of eggs.
Keep going.

It's fine to post egg pictures here, though I've experience and heard of others having unexpected experiences where nest mothers are so territorial ...beware intruder!

I've had that happen before, especially with catbirds (they're insane) and sandpipers (they're super vigilant). I never disturb the eggs, I just take pictures of them. lol
Keep going.
