Salvia rhinosina is a synonym of Salvia stachydifolia and Flowers By The Sea lists it that way. Click the link to see pics there. Click the smaller pic to enlarge it.

These are two distinct species, in my opinion. Not as a botanist but as a grower.

We tested several clones of stachydifolia over the last few years and may be releasing one this year.

@FBTS Kermit

I submitted it as rhinosina, but it got listed in the database as stachydifolia when it got approved (not my doing). Here's the database link and below that are the Botanical names shown on the database.

Salvia (Salvia stachydifolia)

Botanical names:
Salvia stachydifolia Accepted
Salvia rhinosina Synonym
Salvia matico Synonym

I continue to question choices like this, and the naming of Salvia guaranitica. And I'm happy not to be a botanist.

By the way, your new plant, Salvia elegans 'Elk Sonoran Red'; I just submitted it as a new plant to the database and you mentioned on your website that it "....blooms much earlier in the season than the traditionally grown clone." How early? I have it on the database that it starts blooming late summer or early fall. Does it start blooming mid summer? I didn't want to list that until I found out from you.

Red Pineapple Sage (Salvia elegans 'Elk Sonoran Red')

Thanks!

No, it is a late summer / fall bloomer. Not mid-summer. Six weeks or so earlier than the regular Salvia elegans, but likely too late outside Zones 7 - 11. We did not trial it in colder Zones. We'll see what sort of success our colder area customers have this year.

Might have to order one this year. I love pineapple sage for its scent and the flowers.
