We were planning a cruise to see Athens and Istanbul but continuing unrest and finally, news of the cancellation of port calls at Istanbul caused us to rethink the trip. Being a fan of the unusual, this Antarctica adventure caught my attention. In addition, Uruguay was the only South American country I had not visited and I wanted to check that box. The extreme geography encompassed here limited the window of opportunity but we found dates of January the 10 through February the 1st that would work. I wanted to be here to sing in the Christmas Mass and we wanted to go early to have time to explore in Buenos Aires.

The cruise line is Holland America and the ship is the Zaandam which is 785 feet long and has a passenger capacity of 1327 guests. Researching the trip, I discovered the waters around Cape Horn are particularly hazardous and are known as a sailors' graveyard. There is a memorial sculpture there by Chilean artist Jose Bacells for those who have died attempting to "Round the Horn". More on Cape Horn later.

On January the 6th, after an eight and a half hour flight out of Miami, we found ourselves at the Melia Hotel in Buenos Aires. It is a very nice hotel located close to the harbor. This is a large (17.5 million in the metro area) city but we found it to be clean, friendly, safe and fun. We were soon on the local buses and found our way to La Boca, a tourist Mecca for shopping and entertainment. I want a nice avatar for this so I'm using a picture from Antarctica first. After the first picture begins Buenos Aires.

We bought a package for dinner and tango show through the hotel. It was $120 each but I think it was worth it as the wine was included. Whistling

Guess Patty didn't let you pose with the young lady in the jazzy red tango dress, huh?

Buenos Aires looks like a wonderful place to visit, but I'm not getting on that ship to Antarctica! Have you done the Alaska cruise up the inside passage from Vancouver? It's spectacular as well, and without the two-day each way passage in rough seas. Very little open water at all, in fact. Those cruises happen in the summer when it's really so great to get away from here as well.

Anna, my wife and I both speak Spanish. She is a native speaker, born in Peru. I picked it up through years of living down there. Of all of the cities I have visited, I am most fond of Buenos Aires and Barcelona.

On the 10th, we moved from the hotel to the ship, which stayed docked in Buenos Aires for two more nights. The first night they featured a traditional Argentine Bar-B-Que featuring beef, lamb, chicken, a whole baked pig and I don't know what all. All this plus the dinner at the tango show left me in some discomfort but happy nonetheless.

The ship left Buenos Aires at 6:30 PM heading due east for Montevideo and arrived at 6:30 in the morning. Almost all of this journey took place in the Rio de la Plata, whose mouth at the Atlantic is some 200 miles across. Montevideo is much smaller than Buenos Aires and gives one the impression that development in the city stopped in the 1970s. We had booked an excursion here that promised to take us on a drive through the city, then on to Punte del Este, a beach resort community some two hours away. These first pics are of Montevideo:

Punte del Este is a very popular beach get-a-way for South Americans, especially Argentinians. It has two beaches, one brava, or angry and the other mansa, or tame. The famous landmark, The Hand, by Chilian artist Mario Irarrazabal is shown here. I know there is another one in the sands of the Atacama desert in nothern Chile. Another landmark is Casapueblo, a huge meandering house overlooking the sea about 8 miles up the coast. It was built by Uruguayan artist Carlos Paez Vilaro. It operates as a hotel/restaurant today. This is Casapueblo:

Notice how badly the palm trees look. Constant wind, winter cold, salty air or just lack of care has almost done them in. We left that evening on a two day sail to Puerto Madryn along the Argentine coast.

We pulled into Puerto Madryn about 9:30 in the morning. It is located in a nice sheltered cove and has a concrete pier so the passengers could walk to shore. You could sign up for an excursion to take an 8 hour round trip bus ride to a penguin rookery for a couple of hundred dollars apiece but we opted for a casual walk around the town. They did have a few shops and restaurants close to the harbor but not much else to see. The population is about 90,000 but seemed less. This is the heart of Argentine Patagonia so grassland dominates the landscape. Here is a look around:

It took us two full days and nights to reach Port Stanley. The Falklands are slightly smaller than the state of Connecticut with a population of less than 3,000, most of whom live in Port Stanley. The wind is fierce and no trees have been able to survive so it is a grass covered and stony. There are lots of large sheep as wool is an important product. We had booked an excursion to drive through the countryside and visit a penguin rookery. It must have been 60 degrees but the wind was blowing constantly at 40 knots. Most of the roads are gravel and you need a 4 wheel drive to anywhere.

The locals looked and behaved like Brits and I saw no sign of Argentine culture. In fact, the people had nothing good to say about Argentinians and I guess we should leave it there. First the approach, then a look around:
