My bathroom doesnt have a window just a very small vent fan that is connected to the light so we have to leave it on for hours before it begins to vent ont the restroom. I noticed last this morning there was a smell coming from it so i went to investigate. I thought maybe the dogs accidently peed on the mats while we were alseep so i threw the mats in the wash and all the towels. I mopped with pinesol and hot water, but it still smells. I have no idea where the smell is coming from, but it smells like mold strong. Ive also noticed when we wash our our clothes our shower has the same drain as our washer and water spits up in the shower from it from time to time, but i dont think that's whats causing the smell because i poured clean water down the drain...ive also lit candles and it still doesnt help and I dont see any mold anywhere or any cracks in the toilet. It is a very small restroom with the wall right next to the toilet so there isnt much room in there in general or to look on the other side of the toilet.

Any suggestion's or ideas how to rid the moldy smell? Thanks in advance

That is an unpleasant and irritating smell or sure! I would clean all the drains. You can pour some bleach down it or like I try to do once a month using a drain cleaner that will get rid of hair and soap scum. If there is a hamper in the room, check that and spray with Lysol. In fact, I find Lysol or store equivalent to be effective in killing bacteria smells. If you want to go organic, Thieves Oil is the essential oil that is known to kill bacteria.

Thanks for the info Cheryl! I will have to buy more lysol since we only have a little bit of the homescents spray left. You know the odor neutralizers? Thats what we have. All my hampers are out in the garage by the washer and I was planning on shampooing the carpets later touight. Hopefully by doing this it will remove that odor. Thanks again!

Are the carpets in the bathroom? We once had a carpeted bath. It started smelling terrible, and much later we found out the toilet was slowly leaking at the base. It had soaked the carpet pad but the carpet itself never seemed wet. Check that if you have carpet.

Ahhhhh, carpet? Steam clean and disinfect. Nature's Miracle is an odor remover for pet urine but I find it works well for all odors. Comes in 8oz-Gallon jugs. But mast want to check for leaks. Shrug!

Our carpet isn't in the restroom or the kitchen just in our closest and the rest of the house. The carpets are really old. We're told they get cleaned everytime someone moves, but they were grimy when I took my shoes off when we first moved in. I had shampooed them with our shampooer. We have a Bissel and the pet solution for odors and urine and stains that comes with it. It literally changed the color of the carpet to a lighter shade when I shampooed it the first time. I also recaulked the toilet last year when i noticed the previous one around the toilet was starting to crack, so it should be fine, but i'll check again. I'll also look into that Nature's miracle too. I have to make dinner right now, so i will shampoo it after dinner. Thanks again for the help everyone :)

We don't have a ceiling fan. We have that giant AC duct in between our room and living room. I'm not even sure what size filter's it need's, But, the smell is strong near our bathroom, so I can't distinguish the exact spot. Sometimes it's stronger inside the bathroom when the door is closed sometimes it's stronger in the hall. I'm still not sure where it's coming from and i cant rewash the carpet cause I just did that and i dont want mold to grow there from an overwet carpet if it's not already there. Im wondering if it's coming from the walls, but again there's no visable mold there, you think the smell could be coming from inside the walls?

Have you checked the vent fan or just the vent?

Our air conditioner fan gets moldy and must be sprayed with some thing besides bleach as does not kill embedded mold, only the surface mold.
I now have a mold killer for use on outside oil painted surfaces that penetrates and kills.

Yea it smells like something wet. Like say you leave a towel in your bathroom and it's been there too long thats the smell. But, ive already washed all our clothes, towels, and mopped. Idk what to do about it. I don't smell anything coming from the vent. And, I don't smell anything when I get low to the carpet. It's more visable when you're just standing there. I'm going to try getting lysol this week for it. I should've got some the other day when we went to the store, but they were already closing so we had to be fast and we ended up forgetting to get some things

I've had that smell coming from the sink drain. Is is possible that is where it is coming from?

I've pour water down both drains in there. I may buy some more baking soda for the drains in case it is from there, but Ive noticed our drained smelled in the kitchen last year, but it eventually just went away and it didnt smell the way whatever this strench is. Im half tempted to call my manager, but I doubt they'd reply since they havent even sent someone out or called me back about the rodent problem I reported when I found a dead one in my washer

If you smell it standing ...I would check the air conditioner. That blows air into your room and it may be it is not draining properly or has mold buildup ..so the issue may not actually be IN the house but blowing foul smelling air into the room.

I will find something tall enough to reach it and check the vent first thing tomorrow morning. We've only had that AC duct on maybe less than 5 times I think in all the time we've lived here since it doesn't cool our house down when it's on. And even though the management says there's nothing wrong with it, it still doesn't keep the house cool in the summer's. We just use the fans and window AC's to cool the place down that we bought. If the smell is coming from the AC, I don't know if they'd do anything about it since they charged us last time we had them come out for our AC Sighing!

Again, I would really clean all drains, sink and shower/tub with Draino, Liquid Plumber or the like to get all scum out if the drain and completely clear it. I used Instand Power from Home Depot. $7 for a liter, guaranteed to work or your money back . Works over night and WORKS!

Well...if you don't use the big AC and the vent it feeds, it can't be that then because air does not flow through it

Is your house on a slab or crawl?
Once we had that wet rag odor and it was dampness in the crawl.

I do not work for them but RMR mold killer works very well and comes in a spray bottle.
There are two types and you would want the botanical cleaner and treatment.
They had a sale price last summer but it may be gone now.

I spray the AC intake and also take apart the AC as best I can and spray that.
It works far better than simple bleach.

I will pick up the Instand power this week. I went into the garage today and noticed a smell coming from an opened drain that is similar to what is going on with my hall/ bathroom area, but not the exact same, so it may be coming from the pipes.

Part of the house is on a slab the other half in just on the ground or a slab that's not visible. The house is really old even the sink in our restroom shows the age of the house since it has two faucets are far apart from each other that control one specific temperature.

I will stop by Home Depot this week and try to see what they have. I can't take my AC unit apart. There's a big part that rests on the roof above our room and then a metal air duct that comes in through the house and rests in between the room doorway and hallway. It has me worried it will fall one of these days. But, I will go to home depot and try to get something for it
