I have just purchased turmeric tubers from the local supermarket. They are small with no seen "nodes" or sprouts.
I would like to start growing Tumeric, and, as I live in Canada - along Lake Erie and albeit the most southern point of Canada - I am assuming I would need to start these indoors . My question is, can I plant them directly in the soil, as is, or should I allow them to "sprout", and if so, which is the best way to do that ?

Appreciate any help...

Stick them in a pot with some decent soil and give them a bit of water. Keep them inside until your weather warms a bit. They should be fine.

Take photos as they grow. Good luck and happy gardening.

Gingers don't grow for me until the night temperatures are above 55deg.F consistently. Then they jump up and grow quickly, love warmth and lots of water and fert once they are up and growing.

If you can get them started indoors, somewhere warm they will grow well for you through the summer. Be sure to bring them indoors as soon as the tops start to die back. Harvest some but keep a couple of nice tubers to start again next year. You can just leave them in the pot, keep them cool and fairly dry but a little bit of water won't hurt. You don't want the tubers to dry out completely.

I let my edible ginger grow year-round in a big pot. Outdoors in the summer, indoors in the winter. The foliage never does an obvious die-down in the fall. I've been tempted to try tumeric. Good luck.

So right, Cindy, they don't really need a dormant period. Some of my gingers still have some (fairly ratty) foliage on them, but those stalks won't bloom, and the plants will send up new stalks sooner if I cut them off. If you take them indoors before the nights are cool they'd keep right on, although slower growth at house temperatures.

If our O.P. geastman is growing his turmeric to use the roots, they might want to keep it going all year. I grow mine for the blooms.

Ah. If I keep my ginger warm and well-watered with some sun, I don't lose too much foliage over winter. It'll resprout in the spring. I prefer to harvest ginger as I need it rather than harvesting all of it and then freezing.

I didn't realize turmeric is a ginger... I recently saw it in a seed catalog (Territorial Seeds, I think?). Looks like it would be a fun thing to try growing! Smiling

I googled turmeric. The end of last year. Wow ! So many diferent varieties. Foilage and flowers. Some extreamly beautamas. And the health values of it. I friend in Georgia sent me some tubers. Yellow and white, to grow. Don't know varieties. I want to find out how much to eat for health benifits, and also foods to use it in !
I bought some tablets of it. Took one tablet, with dinner. It gave me heartburn all nite and into morning.

Same here, Phil. Turmeric gives me heartburn like crazy. I have to be very careful to only use a tiny bit for flavoring. The tablets probably have dried, powdered turmeric in them, which is way more concentrated than if you used it fresh.

It's one of the components in curry powders, possibly one that makes it "hotter". I love curry but it gives me heartburn too unless it's very mild.

Hope you take photos of those Turmeric plants when they start growing for you. We'd all like to know what varieties they are. Thumbs up

Other than using the dried turmeric in cooking I also make what is called "golden milk". You can do a Google search and find videos to show how to make the golden milk. It is a healthy drink.

There are also some folks who say to mix turmeric, black pepper and hot water and drink it every morning for improved health.

Turmeric is supposed to help with digestion. I had never heard of anyone getting heartburn from turmeric, but...wow...yep, some folks do. Thanks for teaching me something new. Thumbs up Here is an article to explain it. Hope this helps.

greene - I have read about "golden milk" and tried it once or twice. Even bought some tumeric capsules last year. Before I got into a regimen, life got in the way and it's fallen by the wayside. Need to revisit that.

Hmmm, and thank you for the tip on golden milk. I wonder if I made it mild enough the turmeric wouldn't bother my stomach so much. Black pepper is another thing that sets off my heartburn. But I do know that ginger used to help my arthritis symptoms so I'd really like to be able to consume more of it somehow.

Too much ginger still causes me to have hot flashes, as well even at my advanced age. I love it but have to avoid it unless I have a cold or something. "Warming herbs" as my acupunctureist calls them. They sure do "warm" me.

I've been looking for edible turmeric (to plant) for a number of years....
Lowes had turmeric, two years ago.... But not the right kind... :(

Sorry that you live in Canada... You're pretty much gonna be limited to pot culture.

stone - when I wanted to start growing ginger, DD told me to get some organic ginger from the store as it wouldn't have been sprayed with anything that might inhibit growth. I'm still growing offspring of that original organic ginger 3 years later. I did notice that Whole Foods was carrying a couple of different types of tumeric. Might that be a source for you?

Doesn't seem to be a Whole Foods nearer than Atlanta.

I live in Recife,northeast Brazil. Climate is very tropical. I always have tumeric in my garden, and raise it in a big plastic trays ( 20 x 40 inches aprox) with good drainage. As a starter I cut the tubers in 1 inch pieces and plant them 3-4 inches apart in soft soil and water daily . Tubers will start to sprout in 2-3 weeks and broad leaves appear in 5-7 weeks. These last for 4-5 months. I use the leaves to make Patolyos (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...). After about 8 months of growth I collect and dry the tubers and use for cooking. When I cook any roast I clean the skin and put some pieces in the cooking pot.This imparts special flavour and yellow colour to the food . I find it superior to using ready made tumeric powder.
Fresh tumeric or Curcuma contains curcumin and has several medicinal properties besides being an antinflamatory agent.
As a starter use it sparingly and adjust to your taste. Your yellow mustard contains tumeric/curcuma.

Grocery stores are wonderful places to get cheap bulbs for growing in your garden or a pot. My local grocery has had tumeric all winter - if I had realized what pretty flowers they had, I would have been tempted. I have grown edible ginger from grocery store bulbs but the flowers are boring.

Last week, they had "Buddha Hands". If they are still there tomorrow, I will buy one and look for seeds.

Last winter's project was a Japanese purple sweet potato. I wanted to know if the plant was as purple as the tubers. Nope.... It was a pretty plant though. I grew a whole hanging basket of baby 'taters for my efforts.

I bought Ume from the Japanese grocery and grew myself a tree. Ume are used in Plum Wine and the purplish plums (salty/sour) in Japanese cuisine. I also bought Imo (Japanese Taro) and turned it loose in my pond in CA. They often have lotus roots and Yucca. And Dragon fruit.

The Chinese market recently had some bulby looking things that were labeled as mushrooms. I bought 3 - cost 88 cents. They have sprouted now - I will let you know what they are when they bloom. My guess was Hyacinth but I don't think those are edible. (the Chinese lady at checkout seemed to think they were mushrooms). Confused

Who started this thread about Turmeric? I will send you some if they are still at the grocery. Smiling

For anyone having digestive upset with turmeric capsules, I've got a solution. I take the turmeric root and grate it until I have about a cup. Then I add a couple tablespoons of black peppercorns. Put in a mason jar and cover with vodka. Let this sit in a dark, cool place for about 6 weeks. Shake it every day. At the end of 6 weeks, you can warm it on the stove to get rid of the vodka. This is a turmeric tincture. It's absorbed directly into the bloodstream and will not cause digestive upset. I can't take the capsules, but this is no problem. You'll put a dropperful into a cup of water and chug it down. Hope that helps. I'm putting some turmeric into some soil tonight, thanks to the tips on this forum.
