Is this much variation normal for this cultivar? I'm new to orchids, so I am truly curious.

Hi Carol,
Many orchids open one color and change as they age.. In this case with Cinnamon Stick, it opens the darker color and changes to yellow...I'm not sure about the purple flower..I've never seen a Susan Fender 'Cinnamon Stick' with that coloration. .

Actually, the photo I posted is a hybrid, labeled as follows:

@australis and others, is it appropriate for such a hybrid to be included in this database entry? (Just asking; I find orchid nomenclature/classification mind-boggling!)

Hmm. No, that's not appropriate for it to be there... I was somewhat puzzled at the time with that photo, but wasn't certain that that particular clone didn't vary a lot. I will move that photo either to its own entry (if registered) or to the generic genus entry.

Okay, I have moved the photo. It seems that that hybrid has been registered as Whisky River:

That's unfortunate, Lindsey! A number of Cymbidium seedlings I have are also unregistered. Best one can do is add them to the generic genus entry and note the cross in the caption if you would like to add them to the database.

Lindsey, feel free to treemail me with the cross details and photos that you'd like added. I'll sort them out as time permits, since it can be tricky - you have to confirm the genus is correct for each parent and if they're different, work out what the appropriate hybrid genus is!

Failing that, just you can always post them in the orchid photos thread with the label and some day they might get registered and added to the database. It's not crucial to add them - it's only if you'd like them in the DB.

This one is pretty variable, though. My 'Cinnamon Stick' bloomed last August and you can clearly see the color change Lindsey mentions, even on this one flower stem, from reddish to yellow on the petals.

Not to brag or anything, but I know the pedigree on mine is real since I was able to buy the plant from Susan Fender, the lady it is named for. Big Grin

I'm sure yours and Jim's are the Real Deal too, but it was rather special to have met her as I was paying for this orchid named after her.

I think I got mine from Rafael. He is one of Susan's orchid buddies. They all hang out in the Sarasota area.

Yes, Susan was working for Rafael at Plantio the day I bought mine.
