Louise - are the caterpillars from flying moths - like a cabbage moth? I grow kale here and keep netting - like the tulle fabric - draped over my plants all season long to keep the moths from getting in and laying eggs. Would this work for you rather than using any chemicals?

And do you have a photo of the little nasties trying to eat your Kohlrabi?

There's also an organic-approved spray you can use that will kill off the caterpillars. Here in the US it is known as BT which stands for bacillus thuringiensis. It's a naturally occurring bacillus that just makes the caterpillars sick if they actually feed on leaves that have been sprayed.

If you use this, though, be sure you don't spray any of your butterfly host plants.

To answer your other question, this site originates in the US but we have members all around the world. Everyone is very welcome. (we used to be called "All Things Plants" which I think was a much more inclusive name, myself).

The bT is good stuff that doesn't harm beneficial insects. A soap spray is good too. But if you want something fun, I found an electric tennis racket you can go around swatting the white cabbage moths with!

I had one of those too Yard. It was really fun - for a while then it went south and never came back. (mine was a freebie from Harbor Freight, you know when they're giving something away its not worth squat) Great for the odd fly or mosquito that gets into the house, too.

Louise, if you go to your garden center I'm sure they'll have a little bottle of concentrate with the Bt in it. Your brand names will be different than ours so ask for Bt as the active ingredient and they'll know what you need.
