Last fall I purchased 2 bags of Allium bulbs that I did not get planted outside. So earlier this winter, I put them in pots in soil in my garage. They have started growing. I planted them shallow in the pots so I could add more soil once they started to grow. Here are a couple pictures of them. There are 3 in 3 of the pots and 4 in the 4th pot. My question is do you think it is still okay for me to add soil to the top of the pots? There is probably only about a couple inches of soil under the bulbs. Should I make sure that there is only 4 or 6 inches of soil on top of the bulbs? I want to transplant these outside this spring as soon as our last frost date is gone. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Jeanne

Allium bulbs only need to be planted 3" deep. I see you said there's only a couple inches under them so they should be ok until the weather warms up. If you have less than 3" over them I'd add an inch while they grow. Just enough to keep them from flopping over.

You're in zone 5a so your planting date is May 1st or so? 2 months to go! They may be blooming by then. You may be enjoying Allium blooms in the house before long! Nice Thumbs up

Where did you store the bulbs? The ones I forgot dried up.

When I knew that I was not going to be able to get them planted outside, I left them for a few weeks to a month in the bag in the garage for a while. Then I put them in dirt in the pots but did not water them. A month ago I lightly watered them and just left them in the garage. We have it heated to between 50-60 degrees for our dogs. They started growing so I have continued watering them. I am so anxious for spring.
