I mean into my basement, which is not fully heated. Very much like a glorified crawlspace with high ceilings.

They will go in while temps are above freezing. We are suppose to have 4 more nights of freezing temps, including one night of hard freeze. Bringing them inside before all those nights would mean they would not have further exposure to frost right now.

It is raining now, and will continue to do so overnight so tonight it won't be below freezing. I was reading that a good watering actually helps a plant ward off frost damage, since part of the damage occurs due to the cold desiccating the leaves. I will cover the iris with bloomstalks again for tomorrow night when the temps are suppose to really drop.

We are heading into the deep freeze too with rain on the way today. I brought some of my pots into the garage but do not have room for all of them. The ones outside will just be a risk.

My basement iris refuge has lots of pregnant iris, including 3 different Burseens. I have a couple of his planted that have stalks too. In a normal year these early TB's would be spectacular. Just not this year.

Today has been dreary cold rain otherwise.

Did you mean the cold by itself will kill them or will NOT kill them? We are expected to have down to 19 degrees tomorrow night.

I must have not had enough coffee when I typed that. I meant the cold alone would NOT kill them. D'Oh!

Les, the hard frost a few nights ago got me like that and they perked right up in hours. They're right about the hard freezes. The current predictions are averaging 24° tonight and it's non-stop rained since last night to current. 22° Wednesday and 26° Thursday, yet we hit 81° by Tuesday?! Blinking
Gimme it and I'll grow it!

The irises here seldom get "surprised" in the spring, but, the Re's get a dose of "freeze" every fall....and they will stand 28-29 degrees, with no damage....to buds, blooms or stalks. At lower temps, the buds suffer, and the stalks will get "limp". The stalks will *stiffen up* again if the cold snap is a short one. Also, if the actual "buds" haven't developed yet ( no color showing, and the bud still inside the spathe)it seems that they don't get hurt, at all. The leaves, as Tom mentioned, may get limp, but that doesn't hurt them at all, it seems...they will straighten out just fine when it warms a bit. Just stay safe and warm YOURSELVES !!

The low tonight here is suppose to be 24, but the wind chills are down to 17. And gusts up to 40 mph. Hard to keep things covered in that darn wind! Grumbling

I sure hope Greg, Liz, Lucy and all others to our northeast are doing okay. That is a whole lot of snow being dumped in some areas.

BTW - most of mine perked up, but the pots still went inside. They will be far more affected by the wind and cold the next few days than those in the ground.

At least we are getting much much needed rain.

Leslie - We won't see temps breaking out of freezing untill Friday. I think I'm just going to see how badly they are damaged before I decide what to do. But I am leaning towards leaving them alone and see how well they recover. I'm not holding out much hope for the increases, I'll just be happy if the mother's survive. We've had some really cold weather for at least two weeks here, especially after the tornado went thru here. I'm not looking forward to walking the beds, not to mention all the pots.
Hope you fair well.

Blessings

John, are you seeing bloom stalks? That's the worrisome part, but if your irises aren't that far along yet I think your plants will take the cold without problems. Crossing Fingers!

I agree with Neal - yours should be okay unless the bloomstalks are coming up.

I don't see any, but haven't walked the beds in about 2 weeks. Too cold, damp and windy. Looking out the window things don't seem too bad, so I hope you guys are right. Thanks for the encouragement.
