Ask a Question forum: Is my jade leaf cut dead?

I'm entirely new to this growing thing, which is kinda funny because I come from a family of farmers. Now I got this jade leaf cut from my grandmother and really, if only for sentimental value, would like to make it thrive. But ever since I brought it home it's just been slowly getting worse and worse. I will admit that I think I did over water it (as I hear all rookies do), I think. So, as per advice from a greenhouse I pulled it out gently to check the roots. Very small fragile and few. So I put it back in and loosely packed the soil hoping for better drainage and it's all been downhill from there. I left it alone for two weeks and spots started showing on it and it kinda looked sickly. Now it's winter time here north of 52°, and I expect it to be difficult to grow plants indoors, ESPECIALLY since I live in a basement where the only window with anything close to sufficient to light is a northwest facing window. Now the jade has three different shades of green on it and kinda shriveled at the bottom. Please help!
P.S. the big wound on there is what I think is a nitrogen burn (or fertilizer burn) and was like that when I got it. The poor thing never really had a good start)

That greenhouse gave you poor advice. You likely damaged those fragile roots beyond repair. Your leaf is rotting on both ends. If you manage to get another leaf, lay it on a pot of damp soil, firm it down so the stem end is in contact with the soil and then be patient.
