The same is true for the cultivars I grow, Zoia. Cultivars are a lot closer to having a "painted on"-looking eye/band, though. Sooner or later, a hybridizer will create one...and the existing definition of "applique" won't fit.

Thanks for the "painted-on" idea, Larry. I remember thinking that years ago, but then pfffft! it was gone...until I read your post.

Ken, I did notice that in the AHS dictionary list "Applique, Applique Throat".
So I don't think an Applique Eye will actually change the definition. There will be an applique throat and and applique eye!

Great description, Larry! And I really like your "painted-on" idea -- I think it's the best way of describing appliques. I was just thinking too much about sewing, and my favorite quilts are applique quilts... Hilarious!
