Hi! I saved some squash seed from Greek Sweet Red heirloom winter squash. I only had 3 plants. I read from Carol Deppe that it might not be a good cross if you don't have a large gene pool. There might be mutations from inbreeding.

Will the resulting F2 be desirable? I also grew a Waltham Butternut and a Viliima Rugosa squash. Both moschata.

Reid, did you isolate the Greek Sweet Red from the other moschatas? If not, you're likely to have a cross with those -- or is that what you're trying for? (I'm not quite clear on that, from your post)

Otherwise, if your concern is that just having the 3 plants is a problem as far as "diversity," if you were hand-pollinating flowers on a squash I'm pretty sure you would normally do so from the male flowers on the same or one other plant, not from a whole bunch of plants, so I don't see that it would be an issue.

How did you like that squash? It sounds like it would be worth a try, from the Baker Creek description Smiling

I was going for something pure, but if I do get a cross, it wouldn't be all bad. I will update next August.
