I have been gifted with a Rosa Californica from Theodore Payne Nursery. The tag says to plant in full sun to partial shade on the coast (of California I assume) or in partial shade to shade inland. I am unsure which location would be better here. Does anyone have experience with this lovely wild rose?

Porkpal ....

Most species roses are forest edge plants and do best in partial shade. Many can handle full sun, but not hot blazing sun.

I am going to include a link from Las Palitas Nursery because they have some of the best native plant information I have found. I hope it answers your question.

Thanks, Lyn. My rose is very small so I will keep it in a pot for a while. It is in dappled shade right now, but as long as it stays fairly cool, perhaps I can move it to a location where it will get morning sun.

That works.

You are right to pot it up gradually to grow a larger root mass. That's the best way to give a rose a good start.
