A colleague recently asked me to help them ID a problem with their Buddlejah (Butterfly Bush) plant. The location is Marin County, CA. (north coast). A few photos are attached showing the damage to leaf. The magnification reveals some black residue (eggs?) as well as some holes chewed through the leaves. In one area there is a deposit of sticky residue that has sort of molded the leaf back onto itself, like adhesive. Can anyone offer ideas as to what might be causing this and how to prove it? Thanks! Rich

I would look for a caterpillar, the black stuff looks like caterpillar poop. Some insect larvae can also fold over leaves and kind of stick them together, and live inside the folded over part where they are protected from predators. So I would look inside the folded parts for larvae. Such insects are often called "leaf-tiers".

Thanks! Have you ever heard of the Buddlejah budworm? Not sure if it might be causing this damage...

I can't grow buddleia here, too cold in winter, but see the comment in "Remarks" on this Bugguide page for the budworm:
