|I'm looking into having some rock delivered to use for mulch around my in-ground cacti, and am thinking a thick layer of either plain white/gray gravel or red lava rock. Anyone have any experience using either one of these as cactus mulch or know if one is better than the other?|

If you're trying to zone-push marginally hardy plants at all, the darker color of the lava rock would help keep the ground warmer.

Conversely... a light color stone will keep the soil cooler in a warmer climate. All depends on what one is looking for...
Be content moving inch by inch because, by days end, the inches, will add up to feet and yards.
Fulfilling ambitious objectives is usually done one step at a time.
