beautyberry bushes: when and how top trim? fertilizer?

I have some beautyberry bushes that have long branches. I've read that they can be trimmed to 6" in.
in Spring or Fall, which I'd like to do as one is so long it reaches over a patio.

You can hack them back pretty far and they will come back good as new. I've done it several times.
