I've had these for about a year. Dug them up from a friends yard. The first photo is of one that stayed outside all winter (mild climate). It's counterpart stayed in the green house. I have no idea what they are and I'm obviously not caring for them properly. Can anyone tell me what they are? They're the same name, whatever they are. If I could figure out what it is, I could tend to their proper requirements. Thanks in advance.

The wider leaves look like Billbergia 'Foster's Striate!'

TYVM for the acorn! Happy to try to help your investigation. If that is the correct ID, you'll have a gorgeous bloom eventually (and tons of pups to carry on)!

Thanks for the acorn tip! It was easy for me to recognize because I just finished potting up a bunch for the local plant swap. I only have one kind of Billbergia; the older they get the 'fatter' they get. The pups have thin leaves.

Those should be popular @ the swap! Have you tried putting any in the ground? I did in a few spots this winter. The foliage took a beating but I think they are all still alive. One bloomed about a month ago! Looks like B. nutans?

I have B. nutans and 'Foster's Striate.' FS linked above, here's the nutans:

The ones I have were identified as B. nutans (but invariably someone will come along and say, no!!) Mine live outside under the protection of large trees. They get zero care from me. Twice a year I take the babies and find them new homes. I keep the "ugly" old ones; gotta love ugly old mother plants. Thumbs up Rolling on the floor laughing

That's so cool, TYVM! You're not having problems getting blooms from them out there?

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks they're ugly. Lol. The Foster's one gets more care just because it's prettier (selective gardening I suppose). But the flowers are gorgeous, despite the foliage. Had some planted in the ground and they bloomed in the fall (also with no care). Now that I know what they are (thank you) maybe I can figure out a way to gussy them up and work on their appearance.
