This thing started out like a normal weed, growing up through the middle of an established plant. My wife let it grow because she was curious to see what happened. It eventually grew upward creating a fairly stout trunk (3-4" in dia) and began to shape into a big ball at the top of the 3' tall trunk. Now with the rains gone and sunny days returning, it's gone completely nuts and has doubled in height seemingly overnight.

The leaves remind me of holly, is that was this monster is? There are no berries, never have been.

It looks like a Live Oak.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming...."WOW What a Ride!!" -Mark Frost

Ahh yes, a Coastal or California Live Oak! I haven't seen acorns but it appears as though those might not show up in the early life of the tree.

Thanks, Daisyl!
