I bought some Pansies and Violas today. I did 3 pots to hang on my front porch railing, I bought some purple, some lavender and some yellow. What I had left that did not fit in the pots I planted in the ground. It just felt good to plant something and to now have flowers on my front porch. Anyway after Mothers Day I shall begin planting strong! My favorite time of the year! Hurray!

I found a goldleafed Bleeding Heart, Helleborous and Columbine at the local nursery yesterday. They will go in the ground tomorrow.

I agree My favorite time of year! Hurray!

I am so pleased to see my Bleeding Heart we planted last fall from Michigan Bulb Company is sprouting. Also all 6 of my Columbines are all green and leafy, they look great until those bugs that tunnel inside the leafs get them, thinking about dusting them on the leaves and the dirt under with diatomaceous earth, not sure if that can help. Anyway glad you scored some plants! We planted some Helleborous in the fall we got from Michigan Company but I forgot what they are suppose to look like and when they are suppose to sprout. Linda H.

The bugs are leafminers and they are indeed a problem with Columbines and a few other plants as well.

I have 16 columbine seedlings ready to add among the existing 20 . Should make a good spot. I skuffle-hoed several sq yards of loosestrife. I'll do it again every week any show up. Those plants have to die. I have found a few 10' away.

I love the purple foliage and I love the small yellow flowers. But they cant remain as they spread too much. I thought I would put them in a circle I could mow around, but when new plants show up 50' away, they are not my friends.

The good news is that I have several Autumn Joy Sedum escapees (near the cages to keep them upright) and I will move them. And I have a whole lot of small Nandinas and I have wanted to plant those near the back fence. I counted 20 seedlings today.

I've been scarifying the seeds in winter and tossing them around for several years and it is paying off. They are growing! Now I just need to move them.

I am disappointed with the new astilbes in the front yard. They are reported to be deer-resistant, but several were pulled right out of the ground and I see the deer prints there. I may have to move them to the backyard where the deer don't go.

Maybe I'll plant a low-growing thorny barberry. Or maybe I'll just shoot a few with my crossbow. That might discourage them. I think of deer as just big rats.
