I have a few rhododendrons in northwest Connecticut

They have not done well in a few years wondering if I should prune them, and when and how. Should I prune all the way to 6 inches from ground?

Welcome to NGA, @dpwct .

The yellow leaves on your rhodies appear to be due to chlorosis. What are your soil conditions? I use an "acid-lovers fertilizer" (such as Miracid) for my rhododendons, and you might consider digging in some soil sulfur to lower the pH of the soil.

What is all the growth under your bushes?

I don't like digging around shrub roots. It just damages them. But acidifying the soil around any azalea will help it.
