This popped up under a shrub. It is now 3' tall. Leaves about 1 1/2" long. Bark is smooth but the trunk is only about 1/4" diameter or so. Leaves are opposites and jagged. I'm thinking this may be an elm?

Thanks @porkpal. I'm going to dig it out. It is in a bad location and not a tree I want street side.
