At what genus should I look for this remarkable bromeliad that doesn't make new plants besides its base but from within the mother plant, towering above it?

How awesome! I would start with Neoregelia.

I agree with Neoregelia. There are Stoloniferous Neoregelia that produce pups on stolens like pictured. I have seen photos of Neo. hoehneana that reminds me of your plant and is endemic to Brazil..

Thanks Tiffany and Schott!
I never would have thought Neoregelia..

The Rio de Janeiro state has 53 Neoregelia sps. recorded!
http://floradobrasil.jbrj.gov....

Neoregelia hoehneana is one of them. It does look remarkably similar to mine according to the few photos I've found on the web.
There might be other look-a likes though, so I'd better leave it Neoregelia sp. for now..
