I found a seed / bulb in my deceased mother's greenhouse so I put it in the ground to see if it would grow.
I put it in a shady place and gave it plenty of water. Two long flat leaves grew out along the ground in opposite directions. It grew quite fast and within a few months it was about a metre across. As it was starting to cover the other plants to the side, I moved it to a more open space and watered it well. The two large leaves immediately yellowed and died leaving only the bulb. I searched the Net to see if I could identify the plant and maybe rescue it. It fitted the description of Welwitschia, but seemed to be faster growing. The fact that a lot of water appeared to kill it also suggested Welwitschia.
I thought the plant was dead, but this autumn I noticed a bright pinkish orange flower on a stem extending from the bulb. To my mind, this would rule out Welwitschia. Two new leaves appeared to be starting to grow from the bulb as well.
Any help in identifying this plant would be appreciated as it has sentimental value.
Many thanks.
